Default OB...compliment or insult?

Hello All,

Through my insatiable search for information on early Porsche 928's, I have seen them referred to as "OB's."

Somewhere I read that this means "Old Bastard." OK...

Stupid question: is this a compliment or an insult?

Thanks!

Old Bugger
Old Body
Original Body
Oddly Beautiful

What qualifies?
  • Purists: Only spoiler-less CIS injected 928's (US or Euro)
  • L-Jet owners: CIS cars and ours too since we are the red headed stepchild of the 928 world and we just want to belong to something.... (sorry Glen)
  • EuroS Owners: Meh, our cars rule and don't need a silly title
  • S4 owners: Any pre S4
  • 85/86 owners: Any 16V
  • 911 Owners: Those "cheap" V8 cars you buy when you cannot afford a 32V (which is what you buy when you cannot afford a 911)
  • Non Porsche People: "Is that a 944?"
  • Prius Owners: "Why is that gas guzzler still behind me? He can pass me using the right lane, I'm only going 54mph"

Ok, since you cleared that up for him. Can you tell him the Very Best Oil to use in a 928.

Hacker...
Aha...! Unfortunately, having played the one-upmanship game with car models and makes years ago, I understand what that means.

I'll take take "Old Bugger" and use it as a compliment for the early 928 I find.

Thanks!

WyattsRide - Gee, thanks. That was going to be my next question...

I don't call them OB. Too confusing.

I call them 'early'.

As an owner of an "OB" Euro, i feel the need to correctly identify the "OB" acronym. These can be used by an owner of the "older, slower , plainer, simpler " cars, as i've heard them referred to at any given time:
  • Old Beauty
  • Original Badass
  • Old Beast
  • Ole Blue (my sons nickname for mine)

The definitions post on the newcomers board says it is a 1978-80. Is that a strict definition or does a 1981 qualify?

Thanks!

It's not just a CA thing. Same dam thing happens here in Texas as well.

Nothing "strict" about it.

Generally, as Hacker noted, it's applied to the very early cars, with the CIS injection.
The L-jet was a big leap forward in technology and made maintaining them a lot less complicated.

The "early body but later engine" cars are generally considered "SOBs" (Sorta Old Buggers)

I used to deal with that when I lived in socal. I would fly up behind them and they would get out of the way for fear of becoming the shark's next meal .

But here in norcal they are horrible. They speed up just to cut you off and then slow down. I generally speed off and watch as they try to catch up.

My 81 my mother basically nicknamed the TOB (the other b!tch) as my dad would sometimes pay more attention to it than her.

There are many acronyms for the early cars, they all have their own year specific quirks and that is what makes each one different and special.

Off topic, but can anyone recommend an extreme performance summer tire for my Prius?
