Aloha!!!

I've been meaning to start a project thread for a few months now as I think y'all will find- as a newbie to Porsches and to 928s- I took a few risks in buying my first 928. But I knew that and since I was looking for a drivable project car, all things considered, I think I'm doing alright...


So here it is:

Welcome, Tom.
I have been pleased with my purchase of my 1984 928S about 9 years ago. I knew nothing about the car when I bought it, but it was a decent example. I gradually learned bits and pieces on Rennlist, and have done all my repair and maintenance myself since ownership. I am a total amateur, but the guys on this site are real solid as sources for just about any problem you can imagine. Membership here is the best investment you could ever make, and even those who aren't members get fantastic advice.

Thanks guys... I quickly went from anonymous lurker to paid member/addict and- more recently- trying to contribute to the pool of knowledge here. (Yes, this thread will be indexed... and stuff.)

Joshua- I haven't forgotten you (and a few others that have helped get me to this point). Just taking time to do necessary- you know- field research. But... you mean loco moco yeah?

Thanks for the comments everyone. It can't be said enough how helpful everyone is here and the wealth of information & experience that exists- searchable and otherwise. With most every issue I have encountered or am researching in prep for future work, I come here either first or after reading my workshop manuals. I don't think I've hit a permanent dead end yet. As such, a big Mahalo to my fellow Rennlisters and 928 owners!

I should add too- if I haven't already- that I am not doing any of this as an investment or to add value for a resale. This is my first Porsche and I truly hope to have it as a drivable Porsche even if & when people are primarily jetting around in EVs and/or hydrogen powered cars! (Or teleporting! lol!)

Last week, after hitting a brick wall in trying to replace DS interior door handle, I removed the door latch mechanism. In doing so, I didn't mark where it was (for alignment). In addition, when I did re-install the latch, I didn't check for function... and was stuck. Literally.

Since I was taking Eleonore in anyway for a few relatively minor issues, this wasn't that big of a deal for me. More of a nuisance- but entirely self-imposed.

In taking Ele to Motor Werkes- the following work was done:

1) Installation of new hood latch & receiver (upper latch, lower receiver)
2) Fix AC leak & AC recharge (was already converted to 134 by PO... nice!)
3) Check brakes for wear/required maintenance... experiencing squeal when stopping AND when pulling away after application! (hmmm...)
4) Get wheel locks removed
5) Get passenger seat mounting bolts loosened (so I can mount a fire extinguisher)
6) And, get DS door open- and able to open & close (so I could continue my attempt w/interior door handle)

(I should add too that the last time Eleonore went in with idle issues, it turned out to be temperature sensor II (928.606.125.01). Fortunately, I have both temp sensors on hand now should I ever need to replace either of them again.)

Well.. 1 & 2 were completed successfully (hood & AC); 6 was completed within 30 seconds of pulling up and they opted to finish the job too- works just fine now, which is nice. As for 3, 4 & 5- I'm not sure what the current status.

Nor do I care too much at the moment because...

Picked Eleonore up late Friday afternoon & drover her home without any real surprises until I was pulling in to my parking stall when she stalled. Started up just fine, backed her in and parked her.

Saturday morning (31st), I ran a few errands between 10AM & 2PM and she stalled again- a few times- towards the end of my run, with a rough loping kicking in around 40-45mph (often moving past if already in motion) and then moving southward to include lower, parking-lot speeds where she would stall, but still start up just fine.

Sunday, a day of rest for Ele, I put my sunroof back together- only for the moment though as the sunroof is not yet fully operable.

7AM Monday morning, I drove her to physical therapy (~30 minutes w/o traffic, 15 miles)- no issues. Around 10AM, I drove Ele to a tint shop for an estimate (~30 minutes w/o traffic, 19 miles). Again, no issues. (Bummer is that the shop was closed and/or contact non-responsive, so a wasted trip of sorts...)

And then... I started to head home (~30 minutes w/o traffic, 20 miles). 3 Miles into my return trip, loping returned. Turning off the main drag, she stalled, started successfully, then stalled... several times.

Turning around to head to moto shop, she stalled again and would not start... living up to her name. I called HPD to block traffic and they pushed me on to the shoulder. When tow finally arrived, I had already called shop and there was hope she would start again. So I had tow take me to a beach park (this is Hawaii after all) where I did a little work on her- finally swapping out a mixed fuse bank with all ceramic, and swapped out a few relays (starter, EFI, fuel pump and one that just looked old- horn (which isn't working btw). No change, of course.

After killing my battery, I called for a jump as I left my portable jump pack at the house. Jumping per manual would show on voltmeter (dash), but still no start. Sounded just fine with starting (starter), but nada... so back to the shop she went.

No updates yet... I know Gerard and crew are working on her and am sure they'll figure out what's troubling Eleonore. Hopefully it is something that popped loose on Hawaii's high quality road surfaces (sarcasm) I traveled on since Friday- or something relatively easy. Hopefully...

However, for what it's worth, once I get Ele back, my hot list of things to do next before any serious operation are:

• CE Panel Refresh (Still haven't done this!)- to include cleaning all connectors, re-installing all ceramic fuses, verifying that I have installed all relays I have ordered to-date and documenting everything.
• Taking my dremel to Ele's 14-pin connector and as many grounds as I can get to- documenting progress.
• Finish sunroof re-install, perhaps doing maintenance on the motor itself as it sounds, well, rough.

Lastly, I should add that just in the month of May, I put roughly 500 miles on Eleonore without any real problems during those miles, rolling odo over the 107k mile mark in the process.

Somewhat Surprisingly, here are a few things that are working now which didn't at the time of purchase:

• All lights- interior and exterior- except: red door lights, ashtray light (bulb?) hood light (bulb?) and those darn fog lights
• Headlamp washers actually work!!!
• AC blows cold! (um... when the blower works... lol)
• Hood latch works!
• DS door works from inside & out!
• Central locking system works!
• Dash lights work! (just dim... pod refresh in near future...)
• Lights for pod switches work
• High beams & low beams work
• New center armrest courtesy of Paul Champagne Designs!

Things I still need to fix and/or do:

• Replace AT Torque Converter Seal/Gasket (?)
• New Motor & Transaxle Mounts
• Install 3-piece cross member (?)
• Hatch release motor DC'd by PO
• Rear wiper DC'd by PO
• Windshield Washer (not spraying... blocked hose?)
• Replace intensive washer switch, wiper delay & dash light potentiometers
• Replace Fuel Lines under hood (Have kit from Roger)
• Replace Vacuum Lines (Have hoses from 928 Motorsports)
• Air intake refresh (have "all" (?) parts on-hand, will apply self-fusing silicone tape from 928 Motorsports to injector connectors WIAMIT
• New Tint- Ceramic on all but front and a clear UVA/UVB blocker on front
• Replace all speakers (courtesy of Hans the Great)
• Replace damaged perf Left Rear Interior Quarter Panel w/eBay find which has perfect perf!
• Fiberglass (?) reinforcement to deteriorating door panel
• Install new silicone heating/coolant hoses (special clamps for silicone hose?)

These lists will change over time- beyond just marking things as completed, I am sure. I have obviously left out any body work and brake work for now as they are already in the assessment/estimate stages.

Of course, last, but not least... drive!!!

PS: Officially licensed and wearing safety sticker since last Friday, with my combat vet plates mounted the Friday of Memorial Day weekend ;-)
