I need to fab up a set, and am curious what others have done.
I'm planning on making them solid.
1) I was thinking 8mm sheet aluminum. Is this thick enough for this application?

2) The width of the mounts on the wing puts the uprights on the rear hatch glass. What's the best way to mount the wing. I could cut slots in the lexan and mount the uprights to the trunk floor.

If anyone has a pattern I could borrow that would helpful j

Adam, I can make you a paper or cardboard template of the uprights on the Zombie, haven't looked at it to see if there's a manufacturer tag/plate on it.

Wing evolution:

1996:

2000: Red dynos +6 hp.

2002: Lime Rock, HP Motorsports wing

2004: Infineon, after the big 2003 remodel, but same HPM wing:

2011: Current bigass black wing:

2012: Another view:

That would be awesome Rob. Could you measure how thick the uprights are as well?
I think I'm noticing for the first time that the Zombie is a euro, nice pedigree!
One of my problems is that the mounts on my wing are set in about 2" from the Zombie wing, so where yours hits right on the hatch rim, mine would come down onto the hatch glass. Exactly like this photo of the 928 Motorsports racer.

It looks like Carl has pads that sit on the lexan, but I don't know whats underneath to provide support.

Mine was .5" aluminum.
I machined the surface that interacts with the deck to match, it has a profile in 3D.
I was happy with the results, that area is tricky to fit but is where forces can be best transferred and rearward for wing effectiveness.
There are 3 screws you can just see.

tip: avoid excessive rake. It seems to be a common mistake.

That was an early mount, Adam. It went through the Polycarbonate and connected to the steel flange underneath that the window rubber gasket fit around. Worked good. We sell those plates with the polycarbonate window kits, if you want them.

Later, I molded footings for the uprights so I could mount them direct to the hatch. I looked all over for a picture for you and this is the best one I could find:

Hope it helps.

Mike, is it possible to get a pattern ( or have another set made).

Thanks for the pics Carl. So did you widen the mount points at the wing or are your uprights slightly canted outward to make up for the broader base? If I mounted uprights where everyone else is showing, and the uprights were straight (not canted) they would sit about an inch and a half outside outside the mounting tabs on the wing.

Do you have a local machinist? I can send you what's needed to duplicate it.

Adam, its hard to see from that pic but the top of the footing is actually flat from L to R.

Obviously they are "toed out" slightly because they are mounted in line with the hatch sides, and that is toed out too. The uprights I received with my wing have a bit of swivel at the top, so it allowed this without affecting the attachment at the wing.

Here's a better picture of the Hatch Mounted Wing through the polycarbonate. You can see how it rivets to the flange under the window. It was very stiff - works well.
I only moved the mounts to the outside because I had to switch back from polycarbonate to tempered safety glass to satisfy a particular set of racing rules. That's what made me make molds and create the fiberglass feet that you see in the pictures in post #5.

I have more pictures here: http://www.928motorsports.com/parts/..._rear_wing.php

.
Actually I just used some early euro fenders that had some minor damage. I sold the perfect stock S4 fenders.

You know Adam...you'll likely be making more than one set ... I think I know one or two machinists... will have to check with them

Ha! Always the businessman. Is nothing sacred?

I emailed Adam some CAD files, notes and pics, you're welcome to share them.

I see it now. Originally it looked to me like the flange was on the polycarbonate, I see now that the polycarbonate is sandwiched inbetween.

I like the swivel mount aspect on the top of the uprights, I could definitely incorporate something like that in mounting my wing.
