Default Another take on updating an 86.5

"The Fixer" has really inspired me to sort of come out of the closet with my 86.5 project.

Background: I bought this car after seeing a real junker of a 928 in a used car lot, but in spite of its condition it reminded me of how much I liked these cars when they first came out. A month or so on Rennlist helped me determine what I wanted, and I got this 86.5 auto. Pretty ugly shape, but good body, except for a 50 foot respray (more on that), and acceptable interior. I told myself if I kept it for more than 50K miles I would get serious about it. Mechanicals come first, though, and I have done the TB/waterpump, check the flex plate religiously (loctite-d it and no movement since, thanks Cap'n!), replaced all fuel lines, rebuilt the steering rack, new motor mounts, and a bunch more. So now to get serious. Just finished a front suspension rebuild- brakes. bearings, ball joints, shocks, and am in the middle of the rear end work- all of the above plus cv joint boots.

And on to some cosmetics. This car was originally garnet red metallic w/burgundy, and I know a number of you really like this color, but me, not so much. It hasn't bothered me all that much because the flipper I bought it from re-sprayed it black. Everything that could be gotten to without any real prep, which means there is an awful lot of garnet red still on the car, and it is the stuff that is hard to get to and prep, which means bringing the car back to original wouldn't be as difficult as it might be. And in spite of my reservations about the color, I just might do that, and do it properly.

In the meantime, I want to drive around in something that looks decent (at least to me- and with that comment I can hear the chorus clearing their throats in case they need to sing...). At first I planned on wrapping the car, but now I have decided to dip it. It will be anthracite gray - a lot like meteor gray metallic except without the beautiful gloss finish, my favorite color of the era, esp. with a burgundy interior. And there will be some prep involved, including removal of the spoilers and rub strips. When they were first added I thought Porsche had really screwed up the 928's pristine lines, and I still think so (de gustibus, etc.) so off they are coming.

And I am really glad I am going this route, and here's why:

Pretty grizzly, and I'm publishing them not only as "before" pics, but as a little reminder of what can go on out of sight on these cars.

The car is on the lift right now, so it will be a little while before I can post some pics of the "paint" job, but I have a deadline: Frenzy!

Next installment will be about the pod and dash, something I wrote a bit about on The Fixer's thread on that topic.
