Alternator backing for exterior a/c sensor
Looking at replacing the paris rohn alt on my '81 (was marshal before) and am wondering what are people doing with the outside temp sensor when no cover is used? Do you just leave in hose with no air flow?

The sensor doesn't get it's air from the alternator, it flows just the opposite.

Sean is the ducting connecting to the alternator necessary?, or can the ducting be left open. Will leaving not connected to alternator cause a problem with a/c?

The sensor is just an outside/ambient temp sensor. Secured properly it will be fine, but the alt. will overheat without a hose. It was mounted in the alt. coolant hose because it a good source for fresh air. The fan in the alt. helps to draw in the fresh air and discharges it out the front to keep the alt. cool.

Alternator will in theory overheat. Warranty states no returns for overheat failure.
Cover is circa $30 and the ducting $25.

Without the cover and hose, the alternator is being "cooled" with air from around the exhaust manifold. Oil from any power steering leak adds to the mix.
