928 VS Viper

The guy I bought my 86.5 from sold it to buy a Viper. We have become long distance friends through email. He said he wishes he never would have sold his 928. He also told me the Viper started falling apart immediately after he got it. He wants to get rid of it and get something else. He sold his 928 to me for 10K and bought the Viper for 80K. I know one thing. He won't be getting his 86.5 928 back for damn sure!

I drove an early 96 or 97 Viper pretty hard one night for about an hour and a half. My friend is involved in an exotic car rental business. The car was impressive. The torque curve is amazing, the thing pulled consistently from a dead stop to redline. I was unfamiliar with it so I did not push it too hard in the corners, but it just stuck there and my friend kept telling me there was much more stick available. I asked him if he'd back that up with a check if I crashed it, he got a little quiet. I was unable to get it on the highway but judging by the around town performance it would be awesome. The ride is harsh and the lack of refinement is obvious, but thats not what your looking for w/ a Viper (an early one anyway). Compared to my 85s its a no contest for performance. The Viper would eat it alive. I have not had a chance to compare my 87S4 because I haven't been able to drive it yet.

A close family friend has a '97 Viper and my '89GT is not even close to the Viper performance wise! I can honestly say that I had rather have my GT as the Viper feels uncomfortable to me. To each his/her own.

I followed a yellow viper on I-5 a while back in my 87 auto and had the window rolled down to hear his exhaust (which was pretty sweet sounding on that 8l V10). So, I listened to his exhaust to guesstimate his throttle pressure and rpms and compared it to how hard I was running my car for a very rough freeway performance comparison. Verdict = Viper would definately walk away from me, but not by too much, and that viper was a GTS, the 450hp, 490ft/lb monster! I think a normal RT/10 on the freeway would be a good match up. Not saying go race one, I mean c'mon kids, lets be safe here <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

FYI.

I'm wondering this. I suspect the flaps were down on the F-16. It says "until the jet becomes airborne".
Does it take more than 1/2 mile for an F-16 to get off the ground?

No expert by any means but I doubt an F-16 takes anywhere near a half a mile to take off. Impressive acceleration on the part of the Viper, but a publicity stunt without a doubt.

I remember when they held that event. A local radio station was promoting it for a couple days. What I liked to see, is a Yamaha VMAX against the Viper in a 1/4 mile Dual.
Vmax enthusiasts know about the cool feature called Vboost. Above 6000rpm or so a valve opens to allow the cylinders to breathe from two carbs instead of one. Instantly you have arm stretching, scare your passenger, wake the neighbors, embarrass the sportbikes, pass a Testarossa on the left, break the law kind of acceleration. HTFO is the saying, Hold The *#$% On!
It's like driving a Dragster on the street!" is my description of riding (rather piloting) the Vmax. The bike has a 1200cc 4cyl engine with 4 carbs and a shaft drive that runs 0-60mph in 3 seconds and the quarter mile in 10.5 seconds! The top speed is 150mph+ or is realistically limited by your good sense... Many modifications are available to make the bike much quicker due to restrictions by the EPA and import/export laws.
The whole viper challenge was a charity/benefit fund raising event. Still, it's cool to watch.

A local '85s owner had a chance to drive one of the earlier R/T's. He said the torque was phenominal, but the car was uncomfortable and very much a handful to drive. He compared the two in the following manner, the Viper is a chain saw, the 928 a scalpel.

The engines on the jet are the least efficient when it's stopped or at low speed. The plane vs Viper drag race uses this to maximum benefit of the Viper, and makes for a good publicity stunt. Several people that have driven Vipers have described them the same way to me. Basically like a very quick kit car, with kit car like construction.

Judging by many air show performances it most definately does not take an F16 a half mile to get off the ground. Perhaps with a full ordinance load it'd come close. In airshow performances when they're only carrying fuel they pretty much pull up and go verticle in what seems to be around an eigth of a mile.

I drove a '97 Viper GTS many times during my '89 928 GT ownership. zero-any speed the Viper will smoke the 928. It weighs less and has more power. The car was actually quite comfortable for me at 6'1" and I really like it. It is on my short list of cars to own some day.
The only drawback to the car IMO is that you feel everything that the road offers. From gravel to potholes, the suspension does not absorb much of it, so your body does.
Also, the "thumbs up" factor is incredible. From kids to grannies, everybody looks.
