Default Strange fan behaviour

My radiator fan(s) are acting weird. When the engine comes up to working temp the fan kicks in. But then it alters between on/off (or hi/lo, not sure how these works) with 5-10 sec intervals. I'm suspecting the fan thermo sensor and I plan to replace this.
Anyone who knows if I need a 2 or 3-pin sensor for my european 944 85.5 NA? My car is stored a 4 hour drive away so hard to check myself and would like to have the replacement part with me next time I'm there. Should I replace the thermostat as well?

Grateful for all input in this matter!

I would suspect the fan relay to be faulty...the fans aren't supposed to cycle like on a modern car, they are on or off depending on the temp switch.

Fan relay maybe gets hot from current and breaks contact?

thanks! Yes that is really worth checking out first of all. Makes more sense. A bit of cleaning up the connectors and perhaps resoldering if needed?

If they are cycling between high and low the fan resistors for low speed are shot. Normally you have to replace about 6 inches of wire back from the spade connector as well, the wires get hot and cook the insulation

Thanks, will check these too. Where are they located? Should I measure their resistance? I'm not so good with electric stuff unless the problem is very obvious

edit: is it something like this I should look for?

Yes but the location can vary depending on year. Sometimes they are located on the firewall next to the heater fans, on some early ones they are under the dash

Yup, early (square dash) cars are behind the gauge cluster and a to get to. Late model cars might not be so bad- never had the occasion to mess w/ the resistors on one.
