You can remove the spring from the back side of the seal. Find the seam where they connect it together. Basically they spiral one end down to make a tapered male end. Once you locate the seam, unscrew the connection like backing a bolt out of the nut. Once the spring is laid out straight, cut 10mm off the female end. A pair of dikes works well for that. DON'T cut the tapered down male end. Cutting that end means buying a new seal since using your old spring we don't recommend.

Then, you screw it back together. But you first need to CCW turn the male end a couple turns while not letting the female end spin, so that when you screw it back in, it doesn't have a natural tendency to unscrew itself. It's then in a relaxed state you might say.

Reinstall on the seal and verify it's proper resting place all the way around.

You can practice your cut on your old seals spring.

I've had no issues with the 2 or 3 I installed with a hammer and wooden punch.

But recently I became sophisticated and made a special tool (milled an aluminum spacer instead of using a PVC pipe), and I used Curil T sealant, and that one has been leak free for 1000 miles. It's installed just to the depth of the chamfer.
