Default How much does the tar mats weigh? I found out!

I unfortunately didn't weigh everything because I've been slowly chipping away at this project for a while and wanting to drive the car keeps getting in the way of finishing it.

Tonight I sat and scraped out the entire drivers side floor pan. It was the last bit of it I had left!

Anyway, I remember seeing someone ask how much all the tar mats weigh and whether it is worth it to spend the time removing them.

6lbs 11oz for the driver floor pan.

I would assume that each floor pan accounts for roughly 1/3 of the tar mats in the car. The tar mats in the rear making up the last 1/3. Given that, you are looking at saving around 20-ish pounds by scraping the tar mats off.

Would I do it again just to save 20lbs? Probably not. At least not until I was to the point where that 20lbs would actually make the difference in whether or not I could win a race.

Now it's time to scrape all the stuck on glue and adhesive off! Fun!

BTDT...definitely not fun
Wear a breather mask if you have one! I got sick for a few days breathing all the dust and mold and **** that is stuck under those mats.

Ya that's a good call.

I vacuumed up as much as I could after I pulled up the carpet padding that was for some reason really wet. I wonder what all the carpet padding weighs? especially when it's all wet lol.

The carpet padding leaves a nice mess behind too thanks to the kind gentleman at the Porsche factory that went nuts with the spray adhesive.

If I were to do it again I would definitely go with the dry ice method over a heat gun and scraper. I think that would make it a slightly less arduous job.

I remember removing mine in the first 951 I owned... neighbors thought it was a biohazard. But the end result was worth it. Spec Racers commented on how clean it came out.

+100 on the mask. Your lungs will thank you.
