Well I found a promising 2004 Silver Anniversary Carrera that is really tempting me at this point. The thought of being a wimp and just jumping into a car and drive it without having to "tune" something before I get out of the driveway has a certain appeal

Ok so after MUCH insane deliberation with the three wise guys; me, myself and I, the path is clear. I have decided to keep lemony and get her running. I have decided to go the wimpy of a 1994 968 driveline swap. I figure another 80-90 BHP and another gear with the 968 for $5K is better than another 50 BHP for $10K sticking with the 2.5L. Hopefully in two weeks or less the 50K driveline will be here and we'll start the swap.
Apologies to 'neophyte' for getting his hopes up. I did disclaim that I could change my mind at least 3 times like a little school girl

Ok so here is what we accomplished today - removal of the entire driveline and suspension. Not bad for 5 hours work eh?

OK now that the decision has been made, are you going to keep the trans or get a different one?don't know if yours is an open diff or not. Sounds like you're going to go with a better one if you go that route. Please keep me informed..Hope that you're warm and toasty..-17 here this AM in Fitzwilliam..

The entire suspension and driveline is out and up for grabs. It's an open diff with 78K miles on it all. It's -11 here on the coast at Hampton NH.

Here's the drive line. Best I can tell the calipers, rotors and pads are all brand new and i tested them and they work just fine. There is surface rust from sitting but everything looks new. The clutch looks like low miles as well but I can't say for an absolute certain since I don't know the thickness of a new disc. Based on the existence of near new white lube on the surfaces of the throwout bearing fork and near zero wear on the bearing itself leads me to think this is new as well. With exception to the engine the entire drive line has less than 80K miles on it and it was a one owner car that saw zero winters based on the body.
It's all up for grabs.

Gawd 10 days and still waiting for the stuff! I hate LTL. Found out from Los Angeles Auto that the 3.0L drive train came from a fastidious Porsche enthusiast and that the engine just received a complete 60K mile service plus plus. So we'll see what it looks like when it arrives. Stay tuned!

968 drive train is here!!!
Well it finally arrived today! The 3.0L 6-speed drive train arrived and boy oh boy is it clean. And I don't mean steam cleaned, mop and glow, clean. It was well maintained. Here a couple of pictures:
I need some new motor mounts, cam chain follower shoes and a valve cover set.
Let the building of yellowstein commence!

So like any mechanical engineer wannabe I had to open up the original 2.5L engine to see what the failure mode was.
Ok here is just a tragedy. These pictures are of the original 2.5L engine that was in this car. Someone spent some $$$'s on it too. The head was completely R&R'd and looked to be near perfect. The valves look like they may have been replaced, etc, etc.
Of you look at the picture with me using an allen wrench to hold a small bit of metal this is where it all started. That metal bit is actually one of the harness stays that are at the top of the wasserpumpen.
Apparently it somehow got itself between the head gasket and the block. Then the head was put on. Then without checking to see how the fit looked, some gorilla reefed down hard on the head nuts. So hard on fact not only did he indent the gasket, also the block, the head and flattened the tab!!!
Upon ignition and a few revolutions the part of the tab in the cylinder broke loose and apparently went on end and got wedged between the piston and block. That along with the tab driven into the cylinder at the gasket caused the block to crack.
I am not quite sure how all the intake valves got bent though since it's obvious the engine ran at one point. I did find a notebook assumed to be that of the PO talking about setting the timing several times and unsure if he had done something incorrect.
The failure mode of cylinder #1 doesn't support catastrophic valve damage as far as I can figure. The engine would have may stopped running out the noise was so bad from the debris they cut the engine immediately. Any thots I would love to hear them.
I salvaged a lot of near new parts including a genuine wasserpumpen😅 new belts and rollers, alternator and a nice clean cam, followers and tower.
Truly a crying shame.

Anyway back to the 3.0 swap. Here's what I bought today Bilstein coilovers, Elephant torsion tube bearings, Borbet rims, tires, and other goodies
