944 Pricing Help
Hi,
I'm looking to take a local 944 for a test drive asap, but before I go I'd like to be armed with a little more information regarding price. With most other cars it's pretty easy to nail down their value, however with 944's they seem to be all over the board and are a little more difficult to gauge. For me anyway.
The 944 I have in mind is an 84 (manual) with 150k+ miles on the clock. It's extremely clean inside and out and seems well maintained. What's odd is that it has turbo badging on it. Will have to find out what that's about.
Their ask is 4.5k. Do you guys think there's room to get them lower or is that a fair price for the amount of miles?
Thanks

It's going to depend on the maintenance and history. Find out if the clutch, timing belt, water pump, and front seals have been done recently.
Also look for rust in the battery tray. Early cars' gauges are wonky, look for wiggle in the temp, fuel, and oil pressure gauges. Look for wobbling speedo and working odometer. The engine shuddering when returning to idle is normal for a 944, but excessive vibration could mean bad motor mounts.
If all these are good and the paint and interior are all nice, then $4500 is in the right range.
I sold my last 944 for under $4k, it had 160k mi, nice paint, OK interior, all maintenance done, etc.

Prices vary wildly because conditions vary wildly. I bought my first 944 for $1800 and, while it did run and I drove it daily for about a year, it was in pretty poor condition. A 944 with the major maintenance items taken care of and good paint and interior should sell for $3-4K. $4500 is toward the high end for an NA unless it's in excellent condition, you can still get a Turbo for not much more than that every once in a while.
