Default Looking at 924 s tomorrow

Gents, I would like your opinion on this 924 that I will be looking at tomorrow AM. Seems to have everything covered. I am a little unsure that I can put up with automatic, its only a 3speed. I am certain not as nice as the Tip in my previous 996.
It seems a little odd the owner would not give up his address and wants to meet at a nearby Mcdonalds. If car was kept in garage I would want to see floor for oil etc. or would that all show up parked at Mcd's?
Been for sale over a month and nobody has even looked at it. I see lots of 924 for about 3 or 4K $.

thanks

Yes, it does look like a complete car that was/is well maintained...personally I am not much on slush boxes on 'sports cars' but it would be fun running up through the Everglades.

You have to have a PPI done on the car. Ask if the automatic transmission flex disc has been replaced.

He has done a wonderful job on the car but replacement of the flex disc is $1800 in parts plus labor.
Rubber cracks with age.

924S just aren't desirable especially automatic ones so definitely use this to your advantage when it comes to bargaining. Good luck and the car looks clean. No doubt it appears care for.

Isn't the front bumper missing the rubber bump stops?

I'd run a carfax, I would bet the odometer has rolled over 100k and it's 190k. Engine bay looks pretty dirty, interior is faded, and is that rust on the passenger firewall? Even if it has under 100k, it looks like it's been sitting in the open for a long time.
There's a reason he hasn't gotten any calls, nobody wants an auto 924S at any price, let alone a very premium price like that one.

And the fact that it's not original paint is another big red flag that it's probably not as shiny underneath.

thanks for all the replies. Car is only 80 miles away so I am going to look at it and listen for bad flex damper.
Good point about speedo rollover and engine bay did look pretty dusty/worn.
I will probably call him before I leave to see if he has any paperwork proving mileage on car.

If I were you I wouldn't even waste my time on an automatic. The 924 is already a dog, the 3 speed auto makes it even worse.

And it does look pretty well cared for, but $5900 is still outrageous especially for an automatic. You'd be doing him a favour taking it off his hands for $3000. I can't believe someone put this much money into restoring an automatic, unreal.

You cannot "listen" for a bad flex damper.

Only a qualified PPI technician. It is worth the $150 +-.

If he balks at a PPI---just say thanks and walk away.

It is not a collectors car. Bumpers have been modified. 924S's are not interesting.

It most likely is a "flip," seller bought it cheap and has fixed it up.

It is a 27 year old car, and while it is not any worse than a 944 of the same vintage, it does not have the desirability of a 944.

You will need a PPI so that you know the condition of the mechanicals. A PPI is a little like insurance, you can find out what the real mechanical condition is.

It has an automatic. You will not be impressed.

It is not worth $5900, the seller is trying to cover all of his expenses to restore the car.

If you like it with the automatic, offer $2500. If he balks, you just saved $2500 you can spend on a 944.

Good luck.

And this is from a person who has two 924S' with 5 speeds.

Decent looking car but if you want something special that will go into the collectors market, look for an early 924 2.0L.
Those are getting rare now, especially in good condition.
Or if you want to spend more and have a bit more power, look for a 924 turbo.

I decided not to waste my time. Seller seemed inflexible on price. Really appreciate everyone's input.
I can buy a Boxster for very little more money.

smart move!

If you like 924's get a manual at the very least or a turbo.
