OT - How to get rid of "Service Engine Soon" light?
That light showed up on my dad's Oldsmobile Intrigue (yes, it's my father's Oldsmobile ) at around 30k miles, which is when the factory suggests a tune-up. I can do the tune-up myself, but was wondering if anyone has a cheap trick for turning off the light, without buying one of those handheld controller things.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Black electrical tape works, too...
Fortunately, my Jetta's "check engine" light is easily reset by pressing a button on a box mounted to the speedometer cable. However, I don't think the Olds will be quite as easy...

FYI -the Autozone near me will scan any car with an OBDII port for free.
Keep in mind that if there is something wrong with the engine/transmission, the computer can re-calibrate the mixture, tranny pressure etc., causing poor fuel mileage and the like. –You may have to take it to the dealership anyway.

I know that when my sister's check engine light went on in her sentra, she took it to AutoZone. They told her what the code was and even though they aren't supposed to delete it, they did it anyways.

the check engine light on the e34 can be read and reset by a series of presses on the gas pedal with the car not running but the key in the on position, also on the e34 if you fix something but cant figure out howto turn off the light disconnecting the battery for a few minutes does it.... ofcourse if you didnt fix the problem right it will come back on though.
simpson call a local shop and see if they charge you (or maybe even for free) to plug the diagnostic tool into the car and flip a switch...
at 30k miles shouldnt it be done at the dealer for warranty purposes?

I used to have an Intrigue, 98.
I think if you put key in, don't start it, and full depress the accelerator pedal for 5 seconds it should go off...
then again, it's been like three years
