Default 84 944 won't start/crank

The 944 has been having some fuel issues, has been running poor, backfiring, had trouble starting. I replaced the fuel filter with a new mahle unit. Got a brand new battery. Started fine right after the filter change, but then started cranking really hard. Seems to be running better once started, not backfiring like before, but still has trouble starting. Today it wouldn't crank at all, until I stepped on the gas pedal and it started turning over and started. Drove the car, parked it again. Tried starting, nothing. Doesn't crank at all, fuel pump primes. Tried jump starting, it cranked a tiny bit but nothing significant. Push started it and she fired up, runs great. If I leave it overnight it usually turns over slowly the next day and fires up, not always. I'm leaning towards a bad starter, but is there anything else I should check? Thanks in advance

Starter/solenoid...or associated connections/wiring/harness.

Check the starter for loose mounting bolts, loose connections on starter (be careful here as the battery is attached directly to the starter). If all is normal, pull the starter and have autozone check it for you.

Could be a grounding issue. Check the main ground cable that runs from the battery to the chassis.

Just jump started it and she fired up. So now I'm really confused. If I'm able to jump start it it means that the starter is ok? I tightened the nuts on the starter solenoid and cleaned the battery terminals. Any thoughts?

I remember once going to an island in the Caribbean with my wife... we rented a car, and for a few days, it just seemed to be weaker and weaker when it was trying to start. Finally, on the 4th day or so, if just wouldn't start - I opened the hood to get ready to jump start it, and I found the problem! The battery was motor cycle/garden tractor size.

Rental company had to come bring us a new car.

Moral of the story, if you don't have the right sized battery in there, it won't last long. It will get overtaxed any just can't provide the amperage to crank the engine over.
