Default Safe to remove steering while on ramps ?

I have the 83 up on ramps in the front to replace cracked oil pan.
I also have to clean & lube the manual steering rack since it has to be removed for oil pan removal anyway. Plus repair torn exhaust (pre-cat)

Long story short, the car is sitting in the back yard ON GRASS with ramps under front wheels
I would love to have big steel plates to use for jacking/stands etc ... however on a big-time budget.

IS THIS SAFE ??????
Thanks
Don

Oh HELLS NO!

To remove the oil pan, you have to remove the crossmember.... which holds the lower control arms....which holds the wheels....which are on ramps. Also, it would be much easier to be able to steer the front wheels when removing/replacing the rack.

You need jackstands under it. AND make sure the stands have good support. If you're on grass, you need to keep the stands from sinking. 3/4" plywood is fine, as long as you use a big enough piece to spread out the weight. A couple 4x8 sheets would be good for jacking, stands, and easier to work on than crawling around on grass.

WTF did you do to your car? lol

Hi Don, Just my thoughts. There are ramps and there are ramps. The cheap ramps I do not trust to get under the car to work. You have them on the ground and anything can make them tip over and pin you under the car. I use heavy duty ramps plus place jack stands under the car. You can use plywood under the ramps and stands for stability. It is better and cheaper to be safe than sorry later. I know things are tight for people now, but what is the cost of a hospital stay or funeral. You can't be replaced, the car can be.

Cheers,
Larry

Thanks for your reply, thats what I was thinking too
I do have some flat brick 1 foot x 2 feet that may be handy for jack & stands
