Default Tech Lesson: 16" Fuchs variants and differences

There always seems to be some confusion regarding the differences between 16" 911 type Fuchs wheels (the most common ones out there) and 16" 951 type wheels (rarer and only available on the early 23.3mm offset 944 Turbo cars).

Here is a photo comparison of a 7x16 911 Fuchs wheel (white) and a 7x16 951 Fuchs wheel (red) :

The lip of the 911 wheel verses the lip of the 951 wheel:

The inside of the 911 wheel verses the inside of the 951 wheel:

You can see how the 951 version has been tweaked to accomodate the larger 951 "baby brembo" calipers. The petal section has been shoved further out on the wheel (hence the smaller lip) and some material has been added to the hub section to retain the correct offset. What doesn't show up in photos so well is the fact that the petals themselves are missing a little of material compared to the 911 wheel and also the area of the rim (that would be at the top outboard of the caliper when mounted) is also shaved a little to make a little more room.

The lip of the 7" 911 wheel is almost the same as the 951 8" wheel visually from the outside, and the lip of the 911 8" wheel is much deeper than the 951 8" wheel.

For reference, you can fit the 911 wheel over N/A brakes, early 930 brakes, and the Rennbay Willwoods. They won't fit over the 951/S2/968 or larger calipers. The 951 Fuchs fit over the 951/S2/968 calipers (of course) and the 928S4/951S calipers with a 1/4" wheel spacer (to clear the bleeder valve).

Here is a shot with the 7" 951 Fuchs wheel on the left, the 8" 951 Fuchs wheel mounted on the car, and the 7" 911 wheel on the right to illustrate the lips on the three:

Then there is the 930 Fuchs 9x16 wheel. These have a fairly large lip and accomodate brakes the size of S4/951 calipers and smaller. I didn't have a chance to take them off the car but here is a shot of one on the car for a visual of the lip size:

Unfortunately I don't have the Fuchs Part#'s handy here on this laptop and am away from the garage. If someone has the part#'s handy for the Fuchs and would like to contribute, please feel free. Otherwise I'll get to it on Monday.

The 16x9 Fuchs carry quite a premium price and have been going up steadily in value over the past couple of years, as have the 951 Fuchs. The 8" 951 Fuchs are also desired by the 911 guys so that they can cram an 8" wheel under the front fenders of a narrow-bodied 911 car, and also for brake clearance advantages.

Hope this helps a little bit.

Right on the money, Tifo. The definitive 16" Fuchs explanation.

or

or

[fooh]

or

Great write-up as usual Tifo. I can see now where the large weight differences on the 911 and 951 Fuchs come from.

Good info! Thanks! If a 86 NA was ordered with factory 16" fuchs would they put the 911 or 951 version on them?

When i was looking for an NA last summer the factory equipped 16" fuchs & turbo bars/shocks M474 option were on my wish list. Only found 3! Two in New Jersey (sold) and one in TX now in SD still for sale.

the one that got away $5,500! 86 NA w/ 16" Fuchs & the Turbo suspension. 87,000 clicks. Any lucking Rlister get this Basking Ridge, NJ Beauty?

Yup, "Fuchs" is german for "Fox" and is pronounced something like "*****" (not "fooshes")

Here are my old fuchs wheels on my 86 951. (click to enlarge)
