In an N/A, even SFR only gets 5lbs. boost in the non-intercooled kit making 182 Hp at the wheels. The intercooled kit makes 222 Hp at 8-9lbs. boost.
I doubt you will push more than that with a home-built kit unless you're real familiar with these cars and the superchargers.

just got the book "superchargers" by corky bell, has some great information...

the m90's are good units but the twin screws (like the whipple) seem the best overall...

one thing I read is that the centrifugal superchargers like most kits we see make their power at the top end so they dont have much low end torque but their advantage is that they are easier to fit in the car and can go on the outside of the throttle body where the roots and twin screw have to go between the throttle and the intake manifold.

Hello All,
It looks like you guys are exchanging some prety good ideas and info on SCing the 944 over here. I'll be joining in the discussion more this winter as I will be doing a positive displacement system on my friends 85.5. I'll likely make the parts available to others at a resonable cost as well.
I am surprised Savage944 hasn't chimed in as he is very knowledgable.

I have the SFR Stage II. Tim at SFR explained the following to me:

1) the 8 to 10 psi limit is primarily due to the already high compresion of the engine.
2) the stage II uses an intercooler which allows a change from 5psi to 8
3) with the higher booste you also need the turbo injectors and an adjustable fuel regulator.
4) Using an ARC II you also adjust the a/f ratio.

Tim has vast amounts of knowledge on SC and our cars in general. The biggest problem I have had is getting the a/f correct. Once all dialed in it's great. My sc car is quicker than my 951. After that 0-60 range the 951 deffinetly rules. I recently blew the head gasket I'm almost done with that repair and should be back on the road with it. I have been contemplating doing a bottom end rebuild with lower compresion pistons so I can boost higher.

so if you boosted higher with lower compression, then what kind of HP, TQ could you make? what happens after 60? are you saying a stock 951 is better after 60mph than your car or a modified 951?

I paid the same for my 951 as I did for the stage II kit for one. That said, going faster in a turbo is cheaper by far. SC is not an economical route. If you have the ability to find used stuff and figure the fueling etc. on your own than it would be significantly cheaper. The high price of the kits comes from the research done and also it buys you some tech support from people who really know these cars. With the mods on the 944 it is more of a drivers car. It runs best when full on the throttle, the open exsaust is loud. I am not complete with the mods so I can't give you a full comparison. My last mod I want to put in an S2 tranny I think eventually the na tranny is going to give way. The SC is less of a surge type power. the boost comes on much earlier but the turbo boost is more. the 951 is more of a gentalmans car. I said 0-60 because the sc is quicker. I can't do 150 in the 944, I can in the 951. Dollar for dollar you will get more out of modifying a 951, however the sc 944 is a bit unique and definitely a sleeper car. I love when the ricers pull up thinking its a stock NA and at the next light the confused look you get when you left them standing still. My 944 is more of a project car, I like to try new things etc. the 951 is the one I drive to work every day. Check out http://www.speedforceracing.com/ for some dyno charts. I have talked to Tim about a stroker motor. 3.0 dispacement, fully worked head and JE pistons. HP should be close to 400. and much earlier on than an equivalant turbo.

Why does any supercharger for the 944 have to be $5K? On the bahnbrenner site linked above I found this, SC kit for a VW MKIII 2.0L for $2700:

Compare with what $4.5K gets you with SFR:

Why?
