Default Parking Brake Removal

Looking for directions on how to remove parking brake. Also need to know if it will be necessary to adjust it when I put it back on.

I don't know what parts you're talking about. The lever next to the driver's seat or part of the mechanism at the rear wheels? The haynes manual has a pretty good description.

Dan, If I'm not mistaken, I left the shoes attached to the backing plate and removed the plate as an assembly.

Dan, fill us in on the details. I know the rear calipers have to come off, and in my case the 17mm bolts were on rock hard so I just replaced the pads and put it off for later. How did you do it? Cheater bar?

The parking brake uses the inside drum portion of the rear brake rotor hats. Unless someone drove around with it engaged you shouldn't have to change the shoes, and a thorough cleaning with spray brake cleaner should help operation. I think the only place to adjust them is at the handle, but it's covered in Haynes.

Don't have to remove the parking brake shoes or the backing plate they are on.

Wish you would read the tech manuals and info web sites.

After 21 years and 210K miles of use, I'm pretty sure the linings of the shoes on my 83 are worn. As for adjustment, actually the adjustment is done by both loosening the handle cable and turning a philips screw in the rear hub.

SoCal, I beg to differ. Although I've thoroughly read the procedure in Haynes and Clark's Garage, I still find that it's always valuable and encouraging to hear first hand repair information from other novices on this forum like myself.

SoCal, I removed mine because there is an o-ring behind it that seals it to the trailing arm and keeps water from seeping into the bearing cavity. I replaced the o-ring and added some silicone for good measure.
