Trade a 996 for a 912?
Good afternoon!
I've been lurking in this air cooled basement for a couple of weeks and I have a problem. So, what does any tech savvy millennial do? Pose a question to the internet masses for critical and large life decisions.
Couple of years ago I decided I wanted a Porsche before I had kids and bought a house and couldn't afford one, so I picked up a barely used 996 coupé. It is my only car and thus gets me to and from work, runs errands with the wife on Saturdays, occasionally carts the dog, and takes us to dinner. Bottom line, It has been awesome.
Lately though I've become enthralled with the originals. Unfortunately with 911 prices going astronomically high they are well out of range for my uncle Sam marine corps salary. This brings me to your humble abode of 912s. I think I want a 912 with a hopped up engine. There are perfect numbers matching all original cars out there, and they are lovely but they are not for me! I want a quick little zippy classic sports car, with a wooden steering wheel! I am handy, don't mind polishing, cleaning, little bit of mechanic work, suspension upgrades etc.
My question for you all is, can you live with a 912 as a daily driver? I think I can but want to hear from you guys. (Anyone interested in trading for my 996!?)
Thanks!
Michael

Short answer, no. I have a '66 912 recently restored. I have had many Porsches including a 997. You would tire of the 912 quickly. The creature comforts are just not up to everyday use as an only vehicle. They are fun in fair weather on winding roads or an occasional road trip. You really need a more modern car if it is to be your only transport. And if you don't soon tire of the old car, your wife will.

Thanks for the input gents - based on talking to people it looks like I'm probably going to hold out and look for something more as a toy and less as a daily - that is unless that raby irish green one gets posted for within my budget

For what it's worth, you do have one of the most comfortable and family-friendly 911s out there. While one could make a 912 a daily driver, it will require certain sacrifices. The question ultimately turns on whether you and your significant other are willing to make those sacrifices.
For an alternative view, check out this video:
The owner of the 356 showcased in the video drove his 356 as a daily driver for nearly 1 million miles. You have to admire that!

Having bounced between modern and old school Porsche, I have to say old school is a more rewarding ownership. Although it is best left as a toy and not daily driver.

Thanks! That is the overwhelming opinion it seems. We'll see what happens, I think if the right 912 pops up I might spring for it. Ideally I'd go back to having 2 cars a la Cayenne / 912 or something to that effect.
