Dumb question about headlight upgrade
Hi folks,
I have a stupid question. I would like to upgrade my headlights, but I'm not sure what the name of the new light style is. I've heard H4 and H5 - so maybe someone can educate me.
Basically, My 1986 911 has headlights that has a larger ring around them, and I would like to convert to the style that is a little more sloped back with a skinny constant width ring around it.
From this:
To something like this:
Can someone please help me navigate the terminology so I may start to price out parts? Thanks in advance!!!

I have an 86 with sugar scoops like yours and upgraded to Bosch H4s and added JWest headlight relays.
Here are photos the day I got the car in sugar scoops 5 years ago and how it looks now with a few variety.

That's exactly what I want to do. Where did you get the parts? Did you buy an H4 kit that came with the rings with primer ready for paint? Thanks for the pictures.

You want the euro H4's as JQ posted. The H5's have a similar look but do not perform nearly as well as the H4's.
If you browse the classifieds on Pelican, used sets do come up fairly regularly. The trim rings come in either chrome or black that can be painted to match.

I got mine online H4 with trim rings and had to paint it guard red. Since your car is somewhat grey you can buy with chrome trims as it would look good on it.

Refer to my thread. It's for 964 but all that's involved will be the same

Keep in mind that there are basically two types of H4's. The old style that say "Bosch" and I think were made in Germany, and the current new headlights that are made in the Czech Republic and don't say "Bosch" on the lens.
Functionally I think they are the same (someone please jump in if I'm wrong). The older style are going to run you over $800 used, whereas you can buy the brand new ones from Suncoast Porsche for $650 in chrome (but $1050 with primered rings): https://www.suncoastparts.com/produc...ONVERSION.html

Ok, so assuming I buy something like this:
Do I take the supplied chrome ring OFF to replace it with a paintable ring, or do I get a ring that covers that chrome ring? I see in the 964 writeup there is a paintable ring that goes over it, but I wasn't sure if this would work with those two adjusting screws in the chrome ring - do you have to then take off the painted ring to adjust the headlight beams? Thanks!
It's a bit of a price tag, so naturally I want to make sure I purchase the correct components.

Just follow exactly what I posted in the 964 thread. The chrome rings do not come off. They part of the light. You adjust them first, then cover the screws with another outer trim ring that is painted body color. Yes you have to take the painted ring off to get to the adjustment screws underneath

I like my yellow ones. They're real glass and they say Bosch. :thumb up:

I have the H4's and love them! Looks so much better and lighting factor, puts stock to shame. I call the look, going from circumcised to uncircumcised!
