Default Water in the Coolant-HELP!! Need Advice

I drove to work the other day, NOT hot doggin, just driving. Pulled into work and she smelled a little hot, I jumped back in turned the ignition on the see that it was not overheated, temp was normal. Opened the hood to find oil/water mixture coming out of the coolant overflow tank. Pulled the dipstick to find that it was dry, no oil in the pan. I had it towed to my mechanic, thinking that it was a head gasket? His diagnosis not through taking it apart but through research is a cracked cylinder wall. Has anyone had this problem? HELP!! Thanks

cc, your post belongs in the water-cooled 911 sub-forum but...
If you lost all oil into the coolant system (assuming the system purged the excess volume) and the engine was running normal without smoking, you may have a cracked oil cooler. A compression check is still in order to verify that no damage to the cylinders/pistons while running on low/no oil as well as rule out "D" chunk, a cracked cylinder liner or a cracked head.

A cracked oil cooler is optimistic but you might get lucky.

Good luck...

Thank you for that great starting point we will do that as the car was running perfectly normal. Wouldn't have known for one second that anything was wrong with it.

That engine is toast .... not uncommon on 99. happened to a friend of mine ... cracked cylinder wall and coolant from the water jacket seeps in .. and you cant compress coolant.

there was an article in excellence a couple years back of all the isues with that engine and that was one of them listed .. time to sell it off dirt cheap or get your wallet out for a crate engine.

not toast yet... there are a few that even DIY welds in the cracks. Cracks are usually in the heads and can be bought.

well i hope so .. but coolant on the main bearings is a pretty major deal if it has been running like that .. lets hope for the best but prepare for the worst
