Porsches at Steve McQueen Car Show (18)

When you think of Steve McQueen, you probably think of his illustrious career on the silver screen; perhaps specifically the chase scene from Bullitt, or maybe you think of his racing ambitions, and his three-liter class win at the 1970 12 Hours of Sebring while behind the wheel of a Porsche 908/02.

But few people think about the troubled childhood that preceded McQueen’s successes on screen and on track.  As a youth, the legendary actor was a victim of physical abuse by his stepfather. The abuse was enough for him to leave home to live on the streets by age nine. McQueen’s street life soon led to gang life, and by 14 he was remanded to Boys Republic: a school and treatment community for troubled youngsters.

But reform school ended up being a tremendously positive experience for the man who would eventually portray Lieutenant Frank Bullitt. McQueen credited the two years he spent at Boys Republic with helping him turn his life from gangs and petty crime to success and stardom. Even after he became a celebrity, he remained involved with the school, and to this day, the McQueen family continues their involvement, especially when it comes to organizing the annual Friends of Steve McQueen Car & Motorcycle Show.

Since the event’s inception eight years ago, the show has enjoyed steady growth, and has raised more than $1 million for Boys Republic. The 2016 event, held this past June, offered a great showing of all types of cars, trucks and motorcycles, but seeing as this is Rennlist, we thought you’d enjoy a gallery of just the Porsches, so have a click fest below, and enjoy!
