The Lightest and Fastest 911
The 1984 Porsche 911 SC/RS stands out as one of the lightest and fastest variants in the Porsche 911's history. Built to meet Group B homologation requirements for the 1984 World Rally Championship, this special edition was designed to be as light and powerful as possible. Weighing in at just 960 kg (2,116 lbs), the SC/RS achieved this by using a combination of aluminum panels, thin glass, and fiberglass bumpers, making it 200 kg lighter than a standard 911 SC and almost 350 kg lighter than the Turbo model.
Homologation Special: Built for Rallying
Porsche produced only 20 examples of the SC/RS, plus one for their museum, specifically for rallying purposes. The car was a fusion of the wide-arch 911 Turbo body and a modified version of the 3.0-liter flat-six engine from the 911 SC. The decision to use this engine, rather than the newer 3.2-liter Carrera engine, allowed Porsche to keep the car's weight under the racing regulation limit, ensuring it remained competitive in the rally scene.
Performance Enhancements
Under the hood, the SC/RS featured high-compression forged pistons, 935 cylinder heads, hotter camshafts, and mechanical fuel injection. These modifications boosted the engine's output to 252 hp in street versions and up to 276 hp in race-spec versions. This power, combined with the car's lightweight construction, enabled it to achieve a 0-60 mph time of under 5 seconds and a 0-100 mph time in less than 12 seconds, comparable to the 911 Turbo of its time.
A Racing Legacy
Chassis 021 of the 1984 Porsche 911 SC/RS was delivered to Van Dijk Racing in Switzerland and competed in the 1984 Tour de Corse, finishing in 14th place. This particular car, now residing in the US, has a rich racing history and is equipped with numerous rally-specific features. These include an integrated oil cooler, cross-drilled and ventilated disc brakes, adjustable Bilstein dampers, and a roll cage with removable door bars, among others.
Distinctive Features and Modifications
The SC/RS is adorned with Rothmans decals, Fuchs alloy wheels, and quad hood-mounted rally lights. The car's interior is stripped down for weight savings, lacking rear seats, door pockets, and even a glovebox door. It features racing seats with four-point harnesses, a Jaeger rally computer, and an Eberspacher fuel-operated heater, all designed to enhance its performance and functionality in rally conditions.

With only 5,000 kilometers on the odometer, this SC/RS is not just a rare collector's item but also a testament to Porsche's engineering prowess in the 1980s.
