Why to Buy a Boxster over an S2000

Now that I have your attention let’s get down to business. As someone who has driven both of these cars in stock form here are my thoughts. We’ll compare both cars from the year 2009 since it was the last year the Honda S2000 was produced.

Mid engine balance

Mid-engine cars dance, pivot and rotate in a way that front engine cars can’t imitate no matter how much you modify them. There is an intuitive feeling to the Boxster on the limit that is almost second nature. This is my number 1 reason the Boxster beats out the S2000 in a comparison. Most great super cars utilize the mid-rear configuration and this car is no exception to the rule.

VTEC sold separately

Germans know how to build a car. They don’t need clever gimmicks like VTEC to get the job done just good old fashion performance engineering. The Boxster packs more power and torque than the opposition and in this case a substantial amount. Honda’s finest version of the sports car made a pitiful 162 ft lbs of torque. Quarter mile times suffer because of this giving the edge to the Germans. Porsche also introduced direct injection this year!

Price drop

Initially as high as $57,000 they can now be had in the mid $20,000 range. Not bad for cars of this fit and finish at all if you ask me. As the automotive industry ushers in the era of turbo everything and increasing vehicle weights who knows if these cars could become valuable again. Unlikely, but look at what happened to the 914-6.

Better interior

Walking around I’m 6 feet tall and about 175lbs. Sitting in an S2000 feels like being tortured by someone who gets off on claustrophobia. They really do have one of the worst interiors of any car ever made when it comes to being comfortable. If you’re a masochist they’re great, but the Porsche cars win in this category hands down easily.

It’s a Porsche

Unfortunately, there’s something about telling a girl you drive a Honda that doesn’t roll off the tongue quite the same as a Porsche. Take her out on a date and she will immediately understand the 4th slide in this comparison. No…she doesn’t know or care about VTEC.

Final words

I avoided the aftermarket in this article and strictly wanted to compare these cars as machines offered by their respective manufacturers. Yes, S2000s can be made to be lightning fast, but any car can do that with a big enough pocketbook. As a road car, a machine to drive every day and other social aspects of car ownership Japan’s finest simply can’t keep up.
