Why the New 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS Will Eventually Sell for Millions

It seems like every day you wake up and people are talking about autonomous cars. If you’re anything like me, it pisses you off. This is why the 2018 GT2 RS will be worth millions one day.

Like Money in the Bank?

In 2016 PBS released a study showing teenagers have a decreased interest when it comes to driving by as much as 17.4%. This, combined with the rise of autonomous cars will drive 911 prices higher than they have ever been. 2016 was also the year where the above pictured, rare, 993 GT2 sold for a record at $2.4 million. Here’s a look at the future of some of the rarest 911s being offered today.

How it Will Happen

Porsches seem to be skyrocketing in value. Absurd price tags are being asked for cars that were once considered reasonably affordable. Ignoring the bubble, the reality we have to accept is that driving a car for fun is becoming a rarity. Taking the place of enjoyable to drive cars are greener and “accident proof” autonomous cars, or they will be soon enough. The sad reality is that, one day soon, the internal combustion powered automobile will become something reserved for hobbyists. As what was formerly commonplace goes more and more niche, the value will rise.

Study the Past

Not too long ago, a 1996 Porsche 993 GT2 EVO sold for over a million dollars. Granted, this was a very limited run with just 11 units produced, but you have to look deeper at why it sold for this amount. Porsche can’t go backwards and produce any more air cooled cars. Is the 993 GT2 EVO faster than a 918? Does it offer more features? No. The reason it sold for this price is because it’s authentic and raw, and purely mechanical, without myriad computer nannies. The cars from this era can’t be produced again due to government regulations on emissions, crashworthyness, and even European pedestrian safety rules. The idea becomes more valuable than the actual machine. These were mechanical cars that people fell in love with!

Biology

We have been hard wired for millions of years to respond to our 5 senses. It’s in our biology and ingrained in our DNA. There will be a time when cars smell like appliances, no gas, no hot oil, and no exhaust. Eventually, the stimulation of our own senses will become a rarity in motorsport. Electric cars sound like dentist drills. No one gets excited (in a good way) by dentist drills. V8s burble and pop. Flat sixes growl. V12s scream. All of this will add tremendous value whether or not we consciously realize it.

The Bubble Hasn’t Popped

The bubble hasn’t popped, and I don’t think it’s going to for a long time. Even if it does, the value will come back eventually for the aforementioned reasons. There is a mystique about the Porsche brand that has been slowly building since the 356. They get under your skin, in your bones and you can’t stop thinking about them once you get a taste. They are truly addicting in every sense of the word.

Expensive and Sold

“The new 911 GT2 RS. From $293,000.00” is the official quote from Porsche and is laughable. If you can afford to spend almost double the median house price in the United States on a car, you can afford to add options to it. One off requests, special order colors, and rare options can add thousands of dollars to resale values. I wonder who owns production number #911 or #1 off of the assembly line. These are sure to fetch huge prices in the future. Any top level model produced by the factory is hailed as a masterpiece, and this current super hero of the line is no different. In years to come they will only appreciate.
