Walter Rohrl Takes Iconic 904 Out for a Spin

Hot Laps

Former Porsche racer Walter Rohrl is one seriously lucky guy who gets to drive all of the automaker's most iconic cars on a regular basis. Recently, that included the legendary 904, or a 904/6 GTS to be more specific. Rohrl didn't just go for a slow stroll, either - he took this old school racer to the track for a few hot laps, and Porsche documented the whole thing in this nifty video.

Impressive Performance

The regular 904 was of course fitted with Porsche's flat-four cylinder powerplant, but the 904/6 featured proper flat-six power. Output was 180 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque - impressive numbers for 1964 and amazing numbers for a car that weighed a mere 1,410 pounds.

By the Numbers

That power flows to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission and limited-slip rear differential to produce a 0-60 time of 6.0 seconds and a 163 mile-per-hour top speed - impressive numbers for the era, without a doubt.

Warming Up

Here, Rohrl treats the old race car like the vintage machine that it is, taking it easy at first as he allows the car to warm up. He also needs to get a feel for it before going full send, but once that happens, Rohrl unleashes the 904/6's full potential with some impressive driving.

Clear Talent

Rohrl's transitions from corner to corner are undoubtedly impressive, as is his heel and toe work. The seasoned racer clearly hasn't lost his magic touch over the years, as he slides the vintage race car around the track much the same way he did in actual competition years ago.

Enjoyable Clip

Sliding around the track in a 904 is impressive enough to watch, but throwing in the flat-six and its amazing soundtrack makes this video even more enjoyable. The camera work only adds to the drama and makes for one enjoyable albeit short clip.

Lacking Pedigree

We imagine that Rohrl never tires of these opportunities, and we never get tired of watching them. The only problem here is that we aren't afforded the same opportunity, but then again, we don't have quite the pedigree this season racer presents, either.
