Simple Yet Special

These days, the racier, GT Porsche 911 variants and other special range-toppers tend to garner all of the spotlight - and the money. However, there's something to be said for a simple, basic version of that same iconic sports car, which had more humble beginnings than some may expect. That's precisely why we fell in love with this immaculately restored 1965 Porsche 911 that was recently offered by Broad Arrow Auctions, too.

Military Toy

This early 911 was originally ordered by U.S. Army Col. John Price, who was stationed in Orléans, France at the time. He proceeded to rack up 8,000 kilometers in his first year or so of ownership, and by December of 1965, Price brought his prized Porsche stateside with him - first to Kansas, then later, to Colorado.

Moving On

Price owned his 911 all the way up until 2012, at which point it was acquired by a Southern California-based Porsche collector. Given its originality, that person wanted to restore the car, but also, keep it as true to form as possible. Thus, they enlisted Porsche restorer and PCA judge Tom Drummond to oversee its mechanical and cosmetic makeover.

Two Year Process

That process took roughly two years to complete, and included a bare metal respray in its original Bali Blue hue, while the numbers-matching 2.0-liter powerplant was rebuilt by Precision Motion of Colton, California. Everything else mechanical - including the five-speed manual gearbox, suspension, brakes, and fuel system were all completely redone as well.

Big Bill

Once all of this was complete - and all of the chrome, trim, and new gaskets/seals were added, the total bill came to a substantial $165,000. Since then, this special 911 was also gone through once again in 2023, with even more money spent on keeping it as flawless as possible.

Seeking a New Home

Though it failed to sell at the recent Air-Water-based auction, this very special 911 is still available to purchase, with an asking price of $255,000. Given how unique it is - and how infrequently we see early 911s with this sort of prominence and in such fantastic condition - we don't doubt that it will find a new home very soon, however.
