Statistical Anomaly

With 17 wins at Le Mans, the racing team that this automaker heads has more wins than any other manufacturer in history. Obviously, they are doing something right, so what exactly separates them from other manufacturers that have millions of dollars to dump into their racing programs as well?

More Than A Check Book

Anyone can sit in their armchair and reply, “money” casually when asked why Porsche is so dominant, but it’s not like Toyota doesn’t have that same money as well. The Japanese giant made $236 billion dollars last year alone so that kills that argument. None of these teams are broke, but money is definitely part of the equation. What’s more important than money though?

Experience

Porsche has racing experience dating all the way back to 1951. In fact, they were the first company to participate in Le Mans just after the end of World War 2. That means in roughly 60 some odd years they have won almost 1/3 of the times they have entered. That’s actually a very high win ratio in motor racing which puts into perspective how difficult the sport truly is. Learning what can and will go wrong takes years to master and then there is the fairy dust of having everything fall into place perfectly. Porsche has it down to a science due to these decades of experience.

Team Work

Part of that experience comes in the form of a team that knows how to work together. The drivers are incredibly fast, but they can also pound out laps with ludicrous consistency on the stopwatch. Being able to get the right team together year after year is part of it and this is where the money aspect comes in. When you can pay to get the best talent, you can set yourself up in a position to maximize the magic of a victory.

Hone the Craft

A lot of manufacturers spread themselves thin when they want to go to motor racing. They have a Formula 1 program, a WRC team, an endurance racing team and maybe a powerboat team for good measure. Whatever their high-speed cocktail of choice they tend to divert attention to many different aspects of racing where Porsche has continued to do one thing: sports car racing. And, they do it better than anyone else.

What you can Learn

Porsche Motorsport is a great example of having a clearly defined objective and then assembling the right team to pursue that goal. Stay focused on it for six laborious decades and you just might master the craft too. One thing is for certain, they are only bound to win more races and take home more championships with the ever-evolving Le Mans program that continues to go strong. Thanks for reading.
