1967 911 R (1,760 lbs)

230 horsepower with a weight that makes the lightest 911 on sale today look like a whale, places this car in rarified air. Lightning quick for the time, the car would still be a handful to pass around a track with an experienced driver on modern tires.

1974 Le Mans 911 Carrera RSR 2.1 Turbo (1,808 lbs)

One of the best looking 911s ever made. This 500 horsepower turbocharged magnesium alloy engine is space age for the era it competed in. The power-to-weight ratio is alarmingly high with a compression ratio of only 6.5:1. These cars are no joke with a top speed of 186mph. Imagine that in the rain at Le Mans! This car is packed full of thrills around every corner.

1998 GT2 EVO (2,425 lbs)

The 993 is one of the greatest 911s due to its incredible road presence and its ability to track assertively across all types of road conditions. It’s not exactly a featherweight, which is where the GT2 EVO steps in. At a very light weight of 2,425 lbs for 1998, this car weighs less than a new Miata with an engine that produces 480BHP.

991 RSR (2,740 lbs)

Fast forward to what Porsche describes as the tip of the spear: the latest and greatest RSR. Who doesn’t dream about piloting one of these modern racing cars to victory at Le Mans? Maybe it’s Sebring or Daytona for you, but whatever track it is, there is no denying this is the furthest Porsche has taken the 911 in racing form. Everything is purposeful and done with the motivation of producing the fastest lap time possible.

1969 911S (2,189 lbs)

A considerably light car that was offered in wide availability compared to other cars on this list is the 911S B series from the late '60s. Powered by a fuel injected 170BHP flat-6, this 140mph 911S was one of the lightest cars ever produced by the company. It is the ultimate expression of what everyday usability in a Porsche is about when combined with an exhilarating driving experience. It would be crazy not to put this one on the list!

The Future is Good

The Porsche 911 has come a long way since the first models were rolled out for the public. From '60s carbureted featherweights that smell of gasoline, to modern fire-breathing monsters that feel more like rocket ships than race cars, there is no denying it will continue to be one of the greatest car brands out there.
