Rally Racing Porsches to Spice Up Your Day
Flat 6 fury has never been more apparent than when a Porsche enters into a rally to show the world the precision that goes into each and every car that bears the badge of the headlong black horse.
1. Tuthill RGT
Tuthill Porsche unveiled this new 997-based rally car at the 2014 Harry Flatters Rally in Mid Wales. The driver remarked that "the car lands beautifully from jumps, is incredibly nimble through the narrow twist twisty stuff and hugely competent in the last sections."
2. East Africa Safari
Despite being a legend on global roadways, Porsche has been known to take things off-road for quite some time. This 1978 911 ran in the East Africa Rally and has long-travel suspension, built bar, and locking rear differential. The car was reduced to bare essentials, save for an 110-liter fuel tank, it tipped the scales at just 2,635 lbs.
3. 912 Taking First
In 1967 the 912 was driven by Polish driver Sobieslaw Zasada, who drove a factory-loaned car to take the European Rally Championship for group 1 touring car series. In the 1967 Rally of Poland, Zasada drove the 912 to finish first overall out of 50 competitors. In 2012 the 912 took first in class and seventh overall at the London to Cape Town World Cup Rally. The grueling rally covers three continents, 14,000 kilometers and lasts about 26 driving days.
4. Rally Espana Historico
Carlos Sainz and Luis Moya are two-time World Rally Champion that enjoy racing with Porsches. In 2012 the two won the IV Rally of Spain Historical, taking first and beating out over 80 drivers.
5. Rally Deutschland
Back in the 1980's Porsche released this car in order to compete in rally competitions. The 924 Turbo GTS was equipped with an intercooler, increased compression to 8.5:1 as well as other mods to make it ready to compete. Here is an example of one being raced at the 2008 Rally Deutschland by driver Walter Röhrl.
6. Transsyberia Rally
Driven by Spanish team Pau Soler and Laia, this Cayenne S was put through its paces during the 2008 Transsyberia Rally. The rally raid race is held in Siberia and is open only to street legal 4WD vehicles where the only mods done must be for the sake of safety. The changes that this Cayenne S had to go through for the competition are an enhanced Porsche TYraction Management to improve transverse lock, Dynamic Chassis Control, and Active Suspension Management.
