A Revival of Classic Heritage

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of German tuning legend bb-Auto, Galpin Auto Sports has introduced a meticulously crafted restomod based on a 1986 Porsche 911 Targa. This project, inspired by the original 1976 "Rainbow" Turbo Targa, carries forward the vibrant legacy with modern upgrades. The Polaroid partnership in the original version influenced this latest livery design, featuring rainbow stripes over black bodywork. The unveiling of this tribute model is set for Monterey Car Week, an event known for its showcase of automotive icons.

Powerful Hybrid Heart with Classic Design

Beneath the nostalgic exterior lies a thoroughly modern powertrain. The standard 3.2-liter flat-six has been replaced by a 4.0-liter engine developed by Ed Pink Racing, paired with a Vonnen hybrid system. This unique setup delivers a combined 550 horsepower, with 150 hp contributed by the electric motor positioned between the engine and transmission. The hybrid system’s compact design ensures optimal weight distribution while offering increased performance and efficiency. As Galpin Motors President Beau Boeckmann notes, "this build "blends classic Porsche heritage with our own Galpinized style."

Upgraded Handling and Stopping Power

Handling the increased power necessitated a series of performance upgrades. The restomod features 18-inch custom Titan 7 alloy wheels shod in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. Modernized suspension, inspired by the 997 GT3, and adjustable coilovers provide refined handling, while six-piston Brembo brakes deliver superior stopping power. The updated chassis and active suspension management system give this classic 911 the agility to match its contemporary performance capabilities.

A High-Tech Interior with a Retro Touch

The interior of the bb-Auto Targa Hybrid has been redesigned while retaining the spirit of its predecessor. Recaro LX seats in vivid blue upholstery are paired with matching dashboard and door cards, creating a striking cabin atmosphere. A 9.2-inch touchscreen and the Porsche Classic Communication system ensure modern infotainment and connectivity, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additional features such as electric air conditioning and a 660-watt Focal audio system add comfort and convenience to the vintage-inspired cabin.

Monterey Car Week and the Concept Lawn Spotlight

The reimagined 911 Targa will make its debut at the Werks Reunion in Monterey on August 16 before appearing on the prestigious Concept Lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Sharing the stage will be other notable bb-Auto classics, including a 1984 Porsche 911 Slantnose and a 1981 Porsche 928 Targa. The Monterey showcase is a prime opportunity for car enthusiasts to experience the fusion of classic Porsche aesthetics with cutting-edge hybrid technology.

Limited Production

A limited run of these 50th Anniversary bb Targa hybrids is planned. Each model will be customized according to the owner’s preferences, ensuring a unique blend of classic style and modern performance. While pricing details remain under wraps, the exclusive production highlights the brand's commitment to preserving bb-Auto’s legacy while pushing the boundaries of what a restomod can achieve.
