Overflowing Exhibits

Most everyone already knows what an amazing place the Porsche Museum is. There, you'll find an incredible array of rare, one-off, and virtually priceless machinery spanning the entire history of the automaker. But as it turns out, even the museum's storage garage is filled with some incredible cars. Autoblog was lucky enough to gain access to Porsche's rotating collection of cars that aren't currently on display and snap some incredible pictures along the way.

Testing Purposes

That tour kicks off with, incredibly enough, a Porsche 959S. This ultra-rare test car was produced in the late '80s, packing more power and higher top speed than the regular 959. This particular car also happens to be the very first "S" produced and was also used in a direct, head-to-head comparison with the mighty Ferrari F40.

Hypercars Galore

Moving on, we spot a Carrera GT getting service, and it's just one of a dozen owned by the Porsche museum. Then we get to see a 918 test mule sitting in the back, which is lacking a few important body panels but features a chassis based on the Carrera GT. It also just so happens to be the first driveable 918 ever produced during the car's development.

Road Legal Racer

The incredible tour continues with the very first road-legal 911 GT1, which Porsche calls "the homologation car of the homologation cars." It's also the first road-legal Porsche with a carbon monocoque, something we're pretty much used to these days. They also note that it's a "car that won LeMans, but you can also go to the grocery store and buy stuff in."

GTs Galore

If all of that isn't impressive enough, the tour continues with a veritable room full of GT cars. Including a 996 GT2, a rare second-gen 996 in white with blue wheels and decals, and multiple examples of every single generation ever produced of Porsche's revered GT models. All of them different, and uniquely special in their own way.

Rare Finds

We continue by checking out the very first 964 RS ever produced, a car that was also displayed in Geneva. The car remains 100% original and has remained in Porsche's possession since new, yet still has quite a few miles on the clock. It sits across from a one-of-13 green 991 coupe, which just so happens to be a prototype as well.

Large Lot

And that's just a small sampling of this incredible collection. There are roughly 60-80 cars in this storage room at any given time, and most of them can be driven with just a little bit of maintenance. For us, at least, this is the very definition of desire. And it makes us want to book yet another flight to Germany, more than ever.
