Cool Piece of Kit

The Porsche Mission R concept is just the latest of many stunning one-offs that have emerged from the Stuttgart-based automaker in recent years, and in this case at least, a preview of a new track-focused machine backed by a customer racing program. Thus, we'll soon see those cars duke it out on the track in what promises to be a monumental occasion, but the Mission R concept is also a pretty cool piece of kit all by itself.

Racing DNA

What's particularly notable about the Mission R concept is the fact that it was developed by Porsche using much of what it has learned in terms of electric technology over the years, dating back to the 918 Spyder and including the brand's efforts in Formula E racing. This is notable as the car's 82 kWh battery pack must be capable not only of supporting many laps of hard driving, but also utilizing a unique direct oil cooling system to keep temps down while that's happening.

Impressive Performance

Of course, we'd be remiss if we didn't talk about the powertrain that makes the Mission R special - its two permanent-magnet synchronous motors produce a maximum of 1,073 horsepower in qualifying mode, which is an astounding number, indeed, and one that features a rear bias thanks to the front motor's output of 429 horsepower, while the rear generates 644 horsepower. It adds up to stellar performance as well, with 0-60 taking just 2.5 seconds and top speed coming in at 198 mph.

Shaving Weight

Porsche has always been known for using lightness to maximize performance, and that's especially important for a vehicle like the big battery-equipped Mission R. Thus, Porsche utilized a carbon fiber cage in its construction, which helps meet FIA safety standards while also contributing to a low curb weight of 3,307 pounds, which is also aided by a transparent polycarbonate and magnesium wheels.

Aerodynamics

Optimizing airflow is critical to a race car's success, and there are plenty of aero tricks going on with the Mission R concept, too. That much is evident by glancing at the car's many wings, spoilers, splitters, and canards, but it also features Porsche's active aero with features such as the Drag Reduction System, which helps maximize downforce by opening and shutting three louvers in the front air intake, as well as adjusting the rear spoiler.

Massive Regen Capability

The biggest obstacle for an EV race car, of course, revolves around keeping it charged up and on the track. In that vein, the Mission R concept utilizes a 900-volt battery architecture that's capable of charging it from five to 80 percent in just 15 minutes. In fact, it only needs to be charged to 85 percent since the Mission R's regenerative braking system is able to recover half of that energy during the typical race outing, which is undoubtedly impressive.
