Redemption at The Glen

Porsche Penske Motorsport had their sights set on the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen from the moment the 2024 calendar was released. Their No. 6 Porsche 963 was disqualified last year despite crossing the line first, due to a minor technical infringement. This year, they returned with a vengeance, achieving a remarkable 1-3 finish in the GTP class. The No. 7 Porsche, driven by Felipe Nasr and Dane Cameron, clinched the win, while the No. 6, piloted by Mathieu Jaminet and Nick Tandy, secured a podium finish.

A Nail-Biting Finish

The victory didn’t come easy. Nasr and Cameron narrowly edged out the No. 01 Cadillac Racing V-Series.R by just 0.749 seconds. Nasr recounted the intense final moments, “It was pretty wild out there... I knew I was going to have one chance, and that one chance came right at the restart.” His bold move paid off, and despite challenging weather conditions, they managed to navigate the 3.4-mile course with precision and skill.

Strategy and Skill

The race was heavily influenced by a 40-minute red flag due to rain, which created challenging conditions on the track. The competition resumed under caution, but once the track dried, it was a battle for the fastest laps between Nasr, Jaminet, and van der Zande. Nasr finally managed to secure a comfortable lead in the last five minutes, demonstrating both the strategic prowess and driving excellence of the Porsche team.

Year of Consistency

This victory marked the fifth podium finish in six races for Cameron and Nasr, solidifying their lead in the GTP standings. Cameron emphasized the importance of consistency in their strategy, “It’s been a great year so far – very, very consistent... That’s what it takes to win this championship.” This approach has been key to their success, allowing them to extend their points lead significantly.

LMP2 and GTD Pro Highlights

The Sahlen's Six Hours also saw dramatic races in other classes. In LMP2, the No. 88 Richard Mille AF Corse team, driven by Luis Perez Companc, Nicklas Nielsen, and Lilou Wadoux, claimed their first victory in the WeatherTech Championship. In the GTD Pro class, the Heart of Racing Aston Martin driven by Ross Gunn and Alex Riberas emerged victorious after a last-lap pit stop by the leading Corvette.

Looking Ahead

As the IMSA season progresses, Porsche Penske Motorsport’s focus remains on maintaining its lead and executing flawlessly. With only a few races left, including the IMSA Sports Car Weekend at Road America, the competition will be fierce. However, with their current form and strategy, the team is well-positioned to continue their winning streak.
