Filling the Speedster Void

Porsche made headlines at the 2024 Monterey Car Week by debuting a bespoke 993 Speedster, created through its Sonderwunsch ("special wishes") program. This model was commissioned by Luca Trazzi, an Italian-born architect and industrial designer who already owned several Porsche Speedsters but longed for a 993 variant. The 993-generation Porsche 911 never officially received a Speedster treatment, making Trazzi’s project a unique venture.

Long Wait

Historically, only two 993 Speedsters were produced: a green one for Ferdinand Alexander Porsche and a silver one for comedian Jerry Seinfeld. Trazzi’s new addition marks just the third time Porsche has ventured into this territory, fulfilling a gap that had intrigued enthusiasts for decades.

Designing the Perfect Speedster

Trazzi’s deep involvement in the design process set this project apart. The vehicle started as a 1994 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, which was then meticulously re-engineered into a Speedster. The design was shaped by Trazzi’s own sketches and concepts, leading to a fully customized build.

Distinctive Features

One of the most striking features is the double-bubble rear decklid, a hallmark of Speedsters, but reimagined with Trazzi’s input. The windshield was shortened and raked to give the car its distinct low-slung profile, enhancing the classic Speedster silhouette. Finished in “Otto Yellow”—a custom paint color named after Trazzi’s dog—the car’s exterior features black 18-inch Turbo wheels with yellow pinstriping, adding an eye-catching contrast.

Modern Meets Classic

While the car’s appearance is steeped in nostalgia, Porsche integrated modern touches to meet contemporary standards. The headlight units incorporate four-point LED daytime running lights, a nod to today’s Porsche 911 models. Inside, the car features Porsche’s Classic Communication Management system, blending a retro interface with modern conveniences like navigation and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

Masterpiece Cabin

The cabin is a masterpiece in itself, with black leather seats featuring yellow stitching in a hand-sewn checkered pattern. This attention to detail extends to the carbon fiber seat backs and illuminated door sills, creating a harmonious blend of classic design elements with cutting-edge materials.

A Powerhouse with History

The Speedster’s heart is a naturally aspirated, air-cooled 3.8-liter flat-six engine, sourced from the 993-generation 911 Carrera RS—a performance icon in its own right. Generating approximately 300 horsepower, this engine was paired with a six-speed manual transmission for the ultimate driver’s experience. The steering, suspension, and braking systems were also borrowed from the Carrera RS, ensuring the car’s performance matches its aggressive styling. With its lightweight construction and performance-tuned underpinnings, this Speedster is more than a showpiece; it’s built to deliver the exhilarating driving dynamics Porsche enthusiasts expect.

A Labor of Love and Craftsmanship

Trazzi’s involvement extended beyond concept and design. Porsche provided him access to key stages of the build, including allowing him to personally apply some of the final paint layers. The build process exemplified the meticulous attention to detail that defines Porsche’s revamped Sonderwunsch program, which now offers a Factory One-Off service for customers seeking highly individualized vehicles.

A Rare Addition to a Legendary Collection

After its public debut at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, during Monterey Car Week, this one-of-a-kind 993 Speedster will head to Europe, where Trazzi will finally take ownership. This project is more than just the completion of a collection; it’s a celebration of Porsche’s legacy of personalization, demonstrating how the brand’s heritage can be reinterpreted for a modern era. While Porsche hasn’t disclosed the cost of the build, estimates suggest a starting price of at least $100,000, with the final figure likely much higher due to the extensive customization. For Trazzi, however, the value lies in having a truly unique vehicle that not only reflects his passion for Porsche but also marks a new chapter in the brand’s bespoke offerings.
