Taycan in Space

For some, the new Porsche Taycan certainly looks like a vessel from the future. Albeit one designed to drive with wheels on the ground, of course. But now, the legendary automaker is teaming up with legendary film studio Lucasfilm to design a Taycan that's equally at home soaring across the skies of foreign planets. At least, it'll do so on the big screen for the latest movie in a long running franchise, Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker.

Nice Mix

According to Porsche, the two are partnering up to design a spaceship that will "have a future role to play in the Star Wars galaxy." According to Lucasfilm creative director Doug Chiang, that vessel will feature a design with elements of X-wing, Y-wing, and U-wing starships, along with the Porsche Taycan.

List of Demands

Apparently, there were a few caveats given to designers. This spaceship must have two front entries, room for two pilots and five crew members, and a large rear cargo door, as well as somewhere between two and five engines. Simple enough, right?

Exciting Development

Needless to say, this is an exciting development for fans of both Porsche and Star Wars, as well as those tasked with making it happen. “Developing a spacecraft with clear Porsche design DNA is exciting and challenging,” said Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche at Porsche AG. “Even though they do not seem to share many elements at first glance, both worlds have a similar design philosophy. The close collaboration with the Star Wars design team inspires and fascinates us – I’m sure that both sides can draw major benefits from this exchange.”

Innovative Design

“The worldwide appeal of the Star Wars and Porsche brands is shaped decisively by their iconic designs,” added Chiang. “We are bringing together two worlds with this project: the exotic film design of a galaxy far, far away and the precision work that goes into developing emotive Porsche sports cars. This collaboration promises to produce an innovative design that will blend the best of both brands to create an exciting new starship worthy of Porsche and Star Wars.”

Future of Transportation

Both companies, while seemingly different, obviously share a passion for design. Which makes this project an enticing one. And given their recent partnership with Boeing that promises to develop a real flying car, it's pretty obvious that Porsche is looking way ahead at the future of transportation as well.

Double Debut

The results of their collaboration will be displayed at the Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker premiere on December 20, alongside, of course, the 2020 Taycan. By then, the general public should also be able to purchase and take delivery of their own earth-bound all-electric sedan. Coincidence? We think not.
