Swan Song

Each year, South by Southwest attracts all sorts of interesting displays of tech, film, music, education, and culture to Austin, Texas. This year's gathering was no exception, and Porsche brought out an array of unique vehicles including Mirage, the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8 from Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, the Vision 357 concept, Vision Gran Turismo show car, and this - a wild art piece dubbed the "Swan Car."

Eliciting Reactions

Based on a 996 911, the Swan Car is a creation from renowned Scottish artist Chris Labrooy, who previously brought it and a collection of other art pieces to the Pérez Art Museum Miami as part of his exhibit dubbed "Dream Big." It's a bizarre machine by anyone's standards, but that's essentially the point - to create something that elicits a reaction from people, typically a good one.

Taking Over

To create this one-off piece, Labrooy first removed its wheels and tires and gutted the interior before adding an 8-foot tall inflatable swan to the mix. That giant apparatus looks like it's sitting inside the car, though it has obviously taken over, with its bottom supporting the weight of the body and the head/neck sticking out from the windshield, proudly standing tall.

Starting a Trend

Laboory has created several similar cars in the past, adding giant float toys to cars and creating things like a pink flamingo 911, as well as another car that was a giant rubber duck. Of course, he doesn't just focus on Porsche vehicles, and has created some pretty wild-looking art pieces from everything from a Nissan GT-R to a Toyota Supra.

Following Dreams

One of his other more interesting creations is a white Porsche 911 Carrera 4S that's literally in the hand of a larger-than-life figure wearing a racing driver's helmet, making the full-size model like a toy car. The artwork is an homage to the dreams of childhood, giving off a playful tone intended to inspire the beholder to wonder where their dreams will take them next.

Making Art Accessible

“Porsche embodies the fulfillment of dreams. With our ‘The Art of Dreams’ initiative, we want to inspire people to do just that - to dream,” said Robert Ader, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) at Porsche. “But we also want to support artists and make extraordinary works accessible to the public."
