Porsche 992.2 911 May Get a Manual Transmission After All

The Porsche 992.2 911 isn't currently available with a manual transmission, but that may change soon.

Controversial Updates

It's safe to say that the debut of the refreshed 2025 Porsche 911 was one filled with mixed reactions, for a few good reasons. The arrival of the first-ever hybrid 911 obviously snagged the most headlines, and not everyone is a fan of that model's unique front-end styling, not to mention the lineup's digital screen that replaces the old-fashioned analog tach, nor the new start button that replaces the physical key turn. However, the 992.2 isn't technically available with a manual transmission at the moment either, though it appears that this won't be the case forever.

Still an Option

It's worth noting that both the 911 GT3 and S/T are still on sale, and each can be had with a manual gearbox, but those two are 992.1 models - not based on the refreshed 992.2. Shockingly, none of the refreshed 911s can be had with a manual at the moment, which is obviously cause for alarm, but MotorTrend has some evidence that this may not be the case forever.

Being Coy

MT recently spoke with Matthias Hofstetter, Porsche's director of powertrains for the 911 and 718, who would only say that adding a manual to the 992.2 is "technically possible." That's obviously far from a confirmation that it will happen, but then again, automakers are always coy when it comes to future products.

Impossible?

It is worth pointing out that while the 992 911 was designed from the get-go to accommodate a hybrid motor in its PDK gearbox, that doesn't seem to be the case with the seven-speed manual. However, on the same token, the 911 S/T features a lightened flywheel in that same gearbox, something Porsche GT Division boss Andy Preuninger previously said was "impossible" to make happen in conjunction with the engine's solid lifters, so we suppose anything is possible.

What About the Base?

What's more interesting is the fact that Porsche isn't bothering to offer a manual transmission option in the non-hybrid 911 Carrera for now. That base model lost its manual gearbox as part of the 992.1 reboot, but the Carrera S and Carrera GTS could still be had with it - until the manual made a comeback in the Carrera T and then the base model.

Many Questions

However, it's worth noting that the Carrera S has long been the volume-seller in the 911 lineup, which could signal that Porsche is waiting to debut a manual transmission option in that particular model, or perhaps the Carrera T. Whether or not this also means that the T-Hybrid will be available in the Carrera S remains to be seen, too.

Pure Speculation

For now, this is all pure speculation, but it just seems unlikely that Porsche won't offer a manual transmission of some sort in the latest 911, though it's unclear when that might happen, nor which model may offer it. However, given the tremendous backlash that occurred the last time Porsche seemed adamant to kill off the manual, it's more likely to happen than not.
