Porsche 908-04 Concept Goes From Fan Concept to Real Mockup
It isn't every day that an automaker builds a full-scale version of somebody else's design. But that's exactly what happened with this stunning Porsche racer.
1. Return of the Long Tail
Porsche's long tail racers are, without a doubt, some of the most beloved and beautiful things to ever emerge from the German automaker. The team at Porsche Vision 908 are, interestingly enough, pretty old school. They prefer a back to basics kind of approach to car design. That includes goodies like mechanical shifters in place of high-tech sequential gearboxes. So their modern iteration of the 1969 908 LH has features just like the original. The team set out to make the 908/04 instantly recognizable as a Porsche, and we'd say they succeeded on all fronts.

3. Art With Purpose
The result of that passion is quite evident by looking at the lines of the 908/04 Concept. It's instantly recognizable, yet Porscheophiles will also notice the subtle differences between it and a vintage race car. Most projects like this are a flash in the pan of sorts. The work gets highlighted in some web feature, and people drool over them. And that's usually the end of the story, as they fade into obscurity. But in this case, the outcome was good enough that even Porsche took notice.

6. From Concept to Reality
Porsche contacted the team at Porsche Vision 908 and offered to help them take the next logical step - a completed 908/04 Concept. The automaker then went ahead and constructed an entire physical mockup of the car, which even features a full interior. This kind of move is almost unheard of in today's world, but it's proof that the 908/04 Concept is not your average project.

7. Driving the Dream
The story of the 908.04 Concept is absolutely remarkable, but sadly, that's probably where it'll end. It remains highly unlikely that we'll ever actually see the car in production or on a race track. But that unfortunate fact doesn't diminish the fact that a group of passionate and talented guys were able to capture the attention of one of the world's most iconic automotive manufacturers.
