It's in the same location as the first Porsche Design store

The 1600-square-foot retail center is located in the center of South Coast Plaza, which is actually the same location as that which the world's first Porsche Design store in 1988. While Porsche Design had previously been an offshoot enterprise for F.A. Porsche’s post-automotive designs, it is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Porsche AG. This allows for additional collaboration on designs and materials with the automaker’s designers and engineers.

The store has a very specific mission

While the goal of the original Porsche Design store was to sell the Porsche brand as a lifestyle, the mission this time around is to better convey the automotive connection to Porsche Design's product line. More simply, it's more focused on the blending of motorsports and merchandise.

Corporate has had its hands in the development of this updated storefront

“We are working closer together [with Porsche AG] in different dimensions—retail, marketing, and technology,” says Jan Becker, Porsche Design’s chief executive officer. “The decision to take Porsche Design over completely was strategic. Porsche realizes that, in the future, it is not only about cars anymore, it’s also about lifestyle. I would regard Porsche Design as the logical surrounding of the core business of Porsche.”

The symbiotic relationship is very obvious

In the center of the floor piece is one of Porsche's latest 911 models. The Porsche vehicle featured in the store and will switch out seasonally, though customers cannot purchase a car here. The 16-by-9-foot high-definition video wall will show Porsche Design products, Porsche cars, and information about the recently opened Porsche Experience Center in nearby Carson. Additionally, there's an enormous multimedia display (16 feet x 9 feet) that tells Porsche's history, all the way up to and including current racing team updates and profiles. Woven into the narrative are an array of merchandise, including sunglasses, sweaters, and even a hookah pipe that includes Porsche Design's signature design.

The new Porsche Design store works

The store is truly a destination worth visiting, even for the most casual of Porsche fans. It's clear that great pains were taken to achieve a look and feel that met Ferdinand Alexander Porsche's general operating premise: “A coherently designed product needs no adornment; it should be enhanced by its form alone. Good design should be honest.”
