More EVs Coming to Porsche by Way of Cayman and Boxster

In the vein of what was done with the Porsche 918, the addition of batteries will be used to bolster performance in the 718 models.

It's all about choices

Straight from the man himself, Porsche chairman Oliver Blume: the next generation of Boxster and Cayman could either have a fully electric or hybrid in the line-up.

Keeping things open

“We have prototypes of the 718 running in electric now, and a hybrid prototype is being built,” he said. “If you look to the next generation of those cars it is possible, although it is not yet clear whether it would be plug-in hybrid or hybrid.”

Prepare yourselves

Klaus Zellmer, President, and CEO of PCNA says that “In September, we will unveil the first all-electric Porsche, the Taycan, so, all in all, we have a thrilling year to look forward to along with our 191 U.S. dealer partners.”

It's about principle

The reason for Porsche building and testing two different powertrains is very simple. It's because they care about creating the best performance car possible and won't sacrifice brand integrity simply to shout about having a green model.

Something for everyone

If the next generation of Boxster/Cayman does end up being hybrid, then it's a safe bet that fully electric models aren't that far off. These new pure electric versions would use the company's new PPE architecture to get their mojo going and to cut down on costs.

Side by side

Fear not fellow petrolheads because we're pretty sure Porsche wouldn't discontinue the traditional gasoline models in the lineup. The plan of attack by Porsche would most likely mirror the rollout of the next-gen Macan, in which new hybrid versions will be sold right along with gas-powered models.

RIght around the corner

Blume remarked “For at least two to three years, we will have both. At that point, we can decide whether to upgrade the combustion engines to the new Euro 7 standard or go fully electric. The pace that countries are changing is different – China wants electric now, Russia is in less of a hurry, for instance.”

So when could we see these new powertrains? Possibly as soon as 2022.
