Daily Slideshow: Is the 911 GTS the Porsche For You?

Porsche has been creating offshoots of its bread and butter sports car for decades. The new GTS is no exception. It offers everything you like about the 911 without breaking the bank like a GT3. Here’s what you need to know.

What you’ll pay

With an MSRP of $120,000, the GTS is a substantial asking price before you even add options. $20,000 over the base price of the Carrera S is nothing to scoff at. In the P-car family, this is supposed to slot somewhere between the S and GT3 so the next question is naturally what it offers that’s different to justify such an asking price.

More power

Being the middle child of the S and GT3 the GTS conveniently fits in the middle of the horsepower spectrum. 450bhp puts it noticeably down on its higher achieving track focused sibling while having 30 more to brag about than it’s little brother. Having said that $20,000 is still a bit extra so there has to be more…

Torque for Days

Having driven a few of these back to back against the Carrera S on the track you do notice the mid range pick up coming off of low-speed corners, particularly hairpins. This is a subtle nuance that one might not notice or scoff at but you will notice it if you drive them back to back. The GTS is the perfect car for someone who wants a little more than the Carrera S, yet doesn’t need the full-blown adrenaline buzz of the 500hp GT3.

Why would you buy it?

Sports car manufacturers make a killing off options with the modern 911s racking up tens of thousands of dollars for popular extras. This 911 gets special treatment in the form of center lock wheels, GTS logos in the seats, PASM as standard and PTV if you specify for the manual transmission. Having coached for Porsche in the past, I can vouch for the increase in performance over the Carrera S and would fork up the additional money any day for the extras. They really do make this car even better…if that was possible.

Worth the money

The GTS is absolutely worth the extra value when you factor in the extra power and standardization of expensive options. Equally at home cruising on the freeway as a daily commuter or shooting out of corners at a track day the 2018 GTS is one car you should very seriously consider if you are in the market for a new 911 before you make any decisions. Porsche really got it right with this gem. Until next time…
