Porsche's Ambitious Six-Stroke Engine: An Overview

Porsche recently unveiled a patented concept for a six-stroke combustion engine, an innovation that could extend the relevance of internal combustion engines (ICE) in a world transitioning toward electric and hybrid vehicles. Traditional four-stroke engines produce one power stroke in a sequence of four movements (intake, compression, power, and exhaust). Porsche engineers have developed a design that produces power more frequently, potentially increasing efficiency and reducing emissions.

Innovations in Stroke Design

In Porsche's six-stroke engine, two additional strokes—a second compression and power stroke—are introduced between the standard power and exhaust phases. These extra steps result from a clever crankshaft design, which modifies the piston’s movement, creating a more complete fuel burn. According to the patent filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office, the engine now operates in a pattern of intake, compression, power, followed by another compression and power, before ending with the exhaust stroke.

Crankshaft Mechanics and Fuel Efficiency

Porsche’s six-stroke engine is made possible by a novel crankshaft mechanism that adjusts the center of rotation. This allows the piston to reach a lower dead center during the additional strokes, enhancing the combustion process. The patent mentions how eccentric gears and a planetary gear system work together to achieve these extra strokes. The resulting effect increases the engine's overall power output, as there are now two power strokes for every three crankshaft rotations instead of one power stroke for every four.

Potential Benefits and Challenges

The introduction of a second power stroke allows the engine to generate more energy from the same amount of fuel, improving fuel efficiency and reducing wasted exhaust gases. However, there are concerns about the complexities involved in manufacturing such an engine. The balance between the performance improvements and the practicality of production remains a question Porsche needs to address before committing to commercial development.

Porsche's Hybrid Efforts and Future Directions

While Porsche's six-stroke engine concept represents a bold attempt to enhance internal combustion technology, it remains unclear if this patent will ever materialize into a production engine. The company is also exploring other methods to preserve the relevance of combustion engines, such as its powerful Turbo S E-Hybrid. This hybrid vehicle offers a balance of performance and lower emissions, hinting at Porsche's broader strategy of integrating advanced technologies into their lineup.
