No beginner's luck

Walter Wolf is a self-made man who got his payday back during the 1970s in the oil industry. He started out as a diver on rigs but eventually climbed his way up the ranks to moving tankers around. With a love of fast cars, Wolf became an F1 team owner and hired Jody Schecter to helm the operation. The endeavor was a great success with the team winning the first race they ever participated in, the Monaco Grand Prix in 1977.

Walter gets what Walter wants

Wolf's current car at the time was a one-off hand-built Dallara Lamborghini Countach that had a custom 500 horsepower V12 and was a common sight at most of the races his team was in. To replace the Countach he wanted something just as special and made a call to the Kremer brothers to order a road legal 935 Porsche. I mean take a moment to reread that last sentence. He had the money and the gall to order a street legal race car just for himself and fully expect an answer of yes.

Porsche pulling off a hat trick

So, of course, you already know that Wolf got his wish because that's the subject of this slideshow. Mind you, the registry for the 935 is split into either Works and Customer-built cars. The Kremer brothers were a privateer racing team that prepped three 935s that finished first and third at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979. A 935 from the racing team of the King of Cool, Paul Newman, came in second place that day by the way.

No steering wheel, no air

The 935 that Wolf received got a coat of navy blue paint with gold accents and the mark of the Kremer brothers on the side skirts.  The interior from a 930 Turbo was fitted inside the 935, including Recaro seats, so that Wolf could enjoy a habitable cabin. However, the Kremer brothers wanted to stay true to the racing aspect of the car and did not install a second air conditioning unit that would cool down passengers. Only the driver can cool off on a hot day with Kremer remarking that it would be better to wear a polo shirt during summer months.

Ferrari F who?

The suspension system on the car was raised 5 cm higher than the racing version with the engine being detuned in the interests of longer engine life. The car also has a custom one-off exhaust that took six whole months to develop and a 2.85 liter twin-turbo twin spark six cylinder boxer engine that makes 740 horsepower at 8000 rpm. When the 935 was taken out on the autobahn and hit 210 mph back in 1979. To put that number in perspective, a Ferrari F40, a giant in the automotive world, hit just 201 mph almost a decade later in 1987.

Where you can find it

Wolf put just over 6,000 miles on the 935 before it was passed over to become part of racer and collector Angelo Pallavicini's museum collection. The 935 that Wolf had was just one of two street legal versions ever created with the other being owned by TAG owner Mansour Ojjeh. Wolf's car is now for sale by Oldtimer Land, a classic dealer, for a king's ransom. When Wolf bought the car way back when the USD equivalent was around $800,000 in Deutsch Marks for the Porsche in 1980.
