1. From virtual to reality

When the 2018 GT2 RS was unveiled at this year’s Microsoft E3 presentation the automotive world was caught completely off guard by the 911 surprise. Porshe was tightlipped on the details of the vehicle but it did give the world it's first sighting sans camouflage of the uber 911. This GT2 based on the 991 platform will come with a pulse-quickening 700 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque but you already knew that from when we covered the reveal. The engine is basically that of the twin turbo S’s 3.8-liter but now sporting larger turbos, and a water injection system. The flat six engine is now paired with an all new custom GT seven-speed PDK transmission.

2. The upgrades

This new 911 sports rear axle steering which has been tuned for the kind of driving that the car is capable of. The car also has a much larger air intakes that are fed through the gaping spaces on the front bumper, a big park bench spoiler, carbon fiber reinforced plastics molded into various panels. Behind those 20-inch front wheels and 21-inch wheels in the back there are ceramic composite brakes. The exhaust system, which is made up of lightweight titanium, is a whopping 15 lbs lighter than the one on the stock Turbo. In fact, the weight of the GT2 RS is just 3,241 pounds! Porsche is so proud of the exhaust system that was developed for the car that they promise an “emotional sound without precedent” will be emitted from it.

3. When the upgrades need upgrades

However, if that is just too heavy for your liking there is a Weissach package that can be optioned that will shave off an extra 40 pounds. This is accomplished by throwing in lightweight magnesium wheels and adding carbon fiber to the anti-roll bars, attendant coupling rods, and the roof. If you call any other place besides the U.S. home then the steel cage will be replaced with a titanium unit. The stripes on the hood are exposed carbon fiber with just a swathe of body paint down the middle to break up the affair. The Weissach package will add an additional $31,000 to the price tag if you so choose to check off that box.

4. Just Porsche being Porsche

In the tradition of building a car that seems to form a symbiotic relationship with its driver, there are ball-joints in all of the chassis bearings that lend a tight connection of the chassis to the body. Porsche reassures us that these small parts will result in a “precise, exact, and direct driving behavior” from the car.

5. Where you'll be piloting the GT2 RS

The two-toned black leather and Red Alcantara interior with carbon fiber bits adorn the cabin with a purposeful passion for encouraging your naughtiest tendencies. Both front seats are full buckets that are encased in carbon fiber backrests. If you download the Porsche Track Precision app you will be able to record and use that data on your phone to get better and faster behind the wheel. Although if you spring for the Chrono Package you’ll have that info right there in front of you in the car to completely obsess over.

6. When will we see it?

The GT2 RS is expected to hit stateside in several months with prices starting at almost $300,000 and that doesn’t include the $1,050 destination charge. The great news for aficionados who might be concerned with the availability as recent Porsche products have been on the limited side, this vehicle has no stated production cap. Oh, and it’s available to order RIGHT NOW.
