Non-Fungible Token

These days, it isn't just physical goods commanding big money at auctions and on various other markets. Digital currency and other virtual goods are also coveted collectibles, and that includes this exclusive design sketch penned by Porsche's exterior chief designer, Peter Varga, which was recently auctioned off as a Non-Fungible Token (NFT) for a value of 30.25 Ethereum, or around 90,000 U.S. dollars.

Charitable Auction

NFTs are based on blockchain technology and relate to a specific asset. This means that an NFT represents the digital ownership of a unique item. Digital goods can be stored, sold, or traded in a virtual wallet. So far, NFTs have been used primarily in the field of crypto art and for digital collections. Collectors and Porsche fans had the opportunity to participate in this auction via SuperRare. Offered as a digital and physical asset, the total proceeds from its sale will now be donated to the non-profit organization Viva con Agua.

Running a Test

"With the NFT initiative, we wanted to test how well such an offer would be received in the crypto community and what kind of response we could generate with it," said Sandra Mayer-Denzel of Porsche Deutschland, who managed the project. "We can definitely be very satisfied with the result and are pleased that we were able to generate an impressive donation sum for Viva con Agua."

Future Projects

"The initiative to auction the Non-Fungible Token was implemented in an interdisciplinary team within a very short time, just Porsche-like," added Lars Krämer, Innovation Manager from Porsche's Sales Department and co-initiator of the project. "We are correspondingly proud of the result and look forward to learning from it for possible further innovation projects in the field of NFT and digital art at Porsche."

Past, Present, Future

As for Varga's unique sketch, it attempts to combine the new all-electric Taycan Cross Turismo with the iconic 911. The drawing brings together Porsche's future and past, depicting a vehicle with the lines, silhouettes, and proportions that make up Porsche's distinct design DNA. The drawing also demonstrates that there is a small part of the 911 in every current Porsche model. Meanwhile, the concept's innovative lines and the dynamic look of the fly line hint at Porsche's future design direction.
