Thornley Kelham's Bid Into the Porsche Restomod Realm

Thornley Kelham has introduced the European RS, a restomod Porsche 911 that stands out amidst a crowded field of high-end restorations. Known for their previous works like the Lancia Aurelia, Thornley Kelham brings a unique blend of classic aesthetics and modern engineering to this latest project. The European RS, with its RSR-style nose hinting at the 993 GT2, promises a distinct look and performance.

The Donor Car and Modifications

Unlike the popular California-based Singer, which uses the 964-generation 911, Thornley Kelham starts with an earlier 911 model for its builds. The choice was driven by the lighter weight of the older model, although modern conveniences like an electric power steering system are available for those who prefer it. The European RS's body is extensively modified, including a 19mm longer, 220mm wider, and 51mm lower shell compared to the standard model.

Bodywork and Build Process

The meticulous build process involves stretching the body to accommodate a wider track—112mm at the front and 214mm at the rear. The doors and front hood are skinned with aluminum, while carbon bumpers and a carbon ducktail rear spoiler complete the exterior transformation. This labor-intensive process, which includes 2,500 hours of hand-finishing, ensures a concours-level finish for each car.

Engine and Performance Options

The heart of the European RS is an air-cooled flat-six engine based on a 993 block, initially displacing 3.8 liters. Equipped with forged Mahle pistons, billet cylinder heads, special cams, and individual throttle bodies, this engine produces 385 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque, with a rev limit of 8,000 rpm. For those seeking more power, options include a 400 hp, 4.0-liter engine, or a high-revving 3.8-liter unit capable of reaching 10,000 rpm.

Chassis and Suspension

The European RS boasts a sophisticated suspension setup inspired by the modern 911 GT3. It includes bespoke front wishbones, four-way adjustable JRZ Motorsport coilovers, and adjustable anti-roll bars. A quicker Quaife steering rack, optional electric power-assisted steering, and lightweight trailing arms enhance the driving experience. The car's torsional stiffness is improved by seam welding and a custom roll cage.

Braking and Wheels

Braking performance is ensured by six-piston calipers at the front and four-piston calipers at the rear, with optional carbon ceramic discs that reduce weight by 17kg. These brakes are housed within 18-inch Fuchs-style wheels, which can be shod with either Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S or Cup 2 tires, depending on the owner's preference and intended use.

Interior Customization

Inside, the European RS combines lightweight construction with modern comforts. The interior features one-piece carbon Recaro buckets, a Momo Prototipo steering wheel, and a lightweight climate control system. Additional sound deadening enhances comfort, while Alcantara and leather trims provide a luxurious touch. A CarPlay-equipped Porsche PCCM infotainment system is seamlessly integrated into the dash for a blend of old and new.

Exclusivity and Inspiration

With only 25 units planned, each European RS is a rare and bespoke creation. Inspired by both modern icons like the 997 GT3 RS 4.0 and classic legends such as the 2.7 RS from the 1970s, this restomod is designed to deliver the analog thrills of its predecessors. The project began with a commission from an architect who wanted the ultimate 911, and now Thornley Kelham offers this unparalleled driving experience to a select few enthusiasts.
