Big Let Down

You won't find many people in the world who have driven a Cayman GT4 and walked away disappointed. After all, this is a special car, particularly if you're a purist. But Rick DeMan, founder of DeMan Motorsports, came away somewhat unimpressed after buying a GT4 back in 2015, at least with the car's lack of power. So he decided to do something about it.

Five Year Journey

DeMan wanted to perfect the Cayman GT4, so he and his team spent the next five years doing just that. And by perfect, we mean adding a serious amount of power to what is already an amazing chassis. It all started out as a simple mission to upgrade DeMan's personal ride but has since blossomed into a popular customer upgrade as well.

Big Changes

DeMan began by increasing the displacement of his 3.8-liter flat-six to 4.0 liters, then 4.25, then 4.5. The bore is increased from 102 mm to 108 mm before the engine is fitted with Carillo connecting rods, Mahle pistons, and a 991 911 crank. Those changes, plus a few others DeMan is keeping secret, result in a 560 horsepower monster.

Smooth Delivery

The engine isn't the only upgrade DeMan performs to the Cayman GT4, however. Most owners love the slick six-speed gearbox in the car, but aren't fans of the long gearing. Thus, DeMan also swaps those out for gears specifically designed to match the new 4.5's power delivery.

Constant Improvement

So far, around 24 customers have opted for these upgrades, and DeMan is constantly tweaking their tune in an endless pursuit of perfection. Each car runs a Cobb Accessport, which allows DeMan to remotely reprogram the ECU to improve performance and smooth out the driving experience.

Impressive Results

That's certainly not something you see very often with aftermarket builders, but it's also another aspect that makes DeMan so unique. And it seems to be paying off because so far, as he says that not a single car has suffered an engine failure, despite the fact that many of them spend a lot of time on the track.

Cost-Value Proposition

The cost-value proposition is pretty high as well. DeMan charges $29,500 for the upgraded engine, which when coupled with a used GT4 makes for a far faster car than the new GT4 at a lower price. And it's a far better upgrade than simply throwing a bunch of bolt-on parts at the car, plus it creates a performance machine that can't be touched by anything costing less than $200k - and that makes it a real bargain.
