Daily Slideshow: Owner Converts his GT3 RS into a Manual Gearbox
We all love performance and speed, but enjoying a car is just as important as how fast it can go. Arguably more so. This is how one enthusiast took a track day weapon and made it even better than before.
Zero Hesitation
Rob pulled the car apart after putting just 900 miles on the high powered Porsche. In his build thread, he says some people call him crazy, but it really makes sense. The GT3 RS is a race car for the road and by adding a third pedal the driving experience is going to get that much better. It will also challenge the driver in a way that a PDK simply doesn’t.
OEM Porsche
Utilizing new Porsche parts was the right decision and allows the car to be serviced at a dealership. The mastermind behind this build claims they have no problem with upkeep and replacing normal manual transmission consumables which makes it a win-win for everyone.
911R
That’s right, the transmission for this build is the same unit used in the 911R. It’s a fitting pair and something that makes the car ultra rare. Of course, it will be slower than the standard PDK equipped, but the owner isn’t concerned with that. This is done purely for the love of driving and bonding with the RS.
Listen to the People!!!
Driving enthusiasts still want manual transmissions! Not offering at least a small volume of cars that people would certainly buy just doesn’t make sense. Proper heel-toe downshifting is a very rewarding experience that PDK has all but done away with. It’s a very weird experience as well to see a guy being congratulated for doing something that has been commonplace for decades. What a bizarre shift in the automotive world!
Trail Blazer
I commend Rob Janev for not caring about the mileage on his car, yanking out the PDK and doing what a manufacturer won’t do. He’s a smart guy who has an incredibly well-documented build that you can find by clicking the link on the next slide. Perhaps if all goes well he can produce a kit that could be sold to others looking to do the same! Maybe when the accountants in Stuttgart see the numbers they will finally give us manual options on all 911s. Until then I hope Mr. Janev’s car gets plenty of publicity!
