Cayman GT4 Outruns 992 Carrera S on the Track

The Cayman is supposed to be the 911's little brother, but that won't stop the GT4 from taking one down on this particular circuit.

Beating Big Brother

Ever since Porsche introduced the latest version of the Cayman GT4, it's received nothing but glowing reviews. Many feel like it's the absolute best vehicle in Porsche's lineup right now, and who are we to argue? Regardless, the GT4 isn't necessarily the quickest or fastest thing on the planet, but on the track, it looks like it might just be capable of taking down its big brother the 911, or at least in terms of the 992 Carrera S.

Video Evidence

The video evidence to support this claim comes to us from YouTuber Auto Bild Sportscars, who wrung out the compact supercar on Lausitzring and then posted footage of their best lap in this video. And at the conclusion of the lap, they show us the results and a chart of other cars' lap times for comparison's sake.

More Than Numbers

The latest Cayman GT4 packs a 4.0-liter flat-six engine that produces 414 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, as well as a six-speed manual transmission. That's good enough for a 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 189 miles-per-hour. Obviously, those aren't the greatest numbers in the world, but there's much more to the Cayman GT4 than stats.

Lightweight Contender

Here we have one of the greatest chassis setups in the world, as well as a fairly lightweight car. Thus, the Cayman GT4 is more than capable of punching way above its weight. And that includes taking down the 992 Carrera S, which comes with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six that produces 444 horsepower. It also does 0-60 in 3.7 seconds and tops out at 191 miles-per-hour.

Impressive Result

When the checkered flag falls (figuratively), the Cayman GT4 manages a best lap time of 1:33.25. The 992 Carrera S was just a tad slower, posting a best lap time of 1:33.62. Clearly, this is a tiny margin and the results could be different based on who's driving either car, but this is an impressive result nonetheless.

Take 'Em Down

The GT4 also outruns some other impressive machinery, including the BMW M4 Competition (1:34.80) and the last-gen GT4, which lapped the same track in 1:35.81. On other circuits around the world, we've seen the new GT4 take down the likes of the Honda NSX, Corvette Grand Sport, BMW M2 CS, and Aston Martin Vantage, too.

Magic Trick

If there's one thing that's abundantly clear from these results, it's that absolute power isn't always the best indicator of track performance. Aside from weight, there's much more that goes into producing a fast track car. And Porsche has worked some serious magic with the new Cayman GT4, that we cannot deny.
